Which washing machine?

Featured Replies

Think we are in need of anew one in the next couple of months so trying to do some research on which one to go for?

Any that i should particularly avoid?

Our current one is an Ariston and is 10 yrs old.

Wanting to spend no more than around £250.

Also how much can i get a washer/dryer for? i understand that some are condesing dryers now and don't need a vent? I realise these are more expensive though.

I am after as large a load carrying capacity and as good engergy rating as possible, oh and preferably silver in colour:thumbup:

Replaced our knackered Hotpoint last year with a Bosch Excell (I forget the model number). Superquiet, big load capacity, A energy rating and very easy to use, but mine is white. I'd personally always opt for a separate drier and washing machine from my parent's experience with combined ones, but they may have improved since then :D

I had a conversation with a local independent recently, when my Mother-In-Law needed a new machine.

They suggested avoiding Zanussi, and, depending on your budget, go for Miele or Bosch.

We went for Bosch.

YOu can get a indiset washer dryer for about £300 from john lewis which includes a second years warrenty and was cheapest around. It is however, like all combined machines not great at either tasks.

A john lewis own washing machine with 3 years warrenty for £300 is also very good and A rated all over. IIRC it is made by zanusi.

If I had the money I'd buy a miele for the knowledge it will keep working for 10 years, but they start at about £500.

I swear by Wife v1

Like other domestic appliances, she arrived in white on the wedding day!!

why did they say avoid Zanussi? we got a Zanussi ZWX last year, in the sale at

Try websites for Curry's, Comet and Tesco Electrical to see what's around for what price.

Someone posted recently (4 months ago?) which "family groups" such appliances fell into (i.e. who owned what). A search might bring that up.

I personally would steer clear of washer dryers and condenser dryers if possible. Washer dryers have a small drum size and drying could well need to be separated into two loads (i.e. 3 x time). It's the best they can come up with for a limited space, rather than being the most efficient (plus more to go wrong).

Bottom line for washing machine in my view is to find out what the myriad programs do (temperature, can you stop them, re-rinse etc) and decide which machine suits your usual washload best. IOW there's no point in spending £100 extra for "delicate" programmes if you are washing sheets and towels mostly, or the converse of buying a 1400 spin speed if you are mainly washing posh blouses and shirts (cos sooner or later you will forget to use half spin and wreck it - very expensive are posh blouses and shirts by comparison with the saving from that extra drop of water you could spin out).

Condenser dryers are of the same ilk IMO. They are the best they can come up with if external venting isn't possible. If venting is possible, no contest IMO, but just my view.

Good luck

I think i am not going to be getting a washer dryer. Got a dryer in the garage that i intend to put on the wall. It does not get used that much anyway.

Its interesting that Miele are good for 10 yrs as that is how long our Ariston has lasted. It still works ok but it moves around a bit and is also noisy, and only has 800 spin speed.

I think something with 1000-1200 spin and a 6 or 7 kg load capacity would benefit us as the washer gets some serious use when you have got a 1 yr old and a 4 yr old.:)

Has anyone got any experience of Beko??? i notice their machines seem very well priced.

I really like the look of the Lg ones too.

I'm a bit put off anything LG 'cos we had a video of theirs once and it was sooo carp:rofl:

According to a washerman - repairer, servicing (he has a website but can't remember what it is called) - apart from industrial machines, Zanussi is the best.

We bought one - very good, no problems - unlike the Beko we had before (inner rubber had to be replaced and twice the damper came loose, luckily I could fix the damper).

Pay the extra and get a Miele. We have one, it came with a 5 year guarantee and they are meant to go on forever.

There is no way i am paying

Repeat of above - but I will stress our washing machine gets hammered.

Family of four - and my son plays Roller Hockey up to 4 times a week and my daughter netball up to 3 times a week. Plus, they throw off clothes after two hours wear sometimes.

Some days it seems the washer is never off.

Miele and Bosch are both good. The Miele I bought new in the UK is still going strong, and it's getting onto 7 years of age now.

Zanussi - difficult one, the cheaper ones aren't great IMHO.

It all depends on how long it will take before the cheaper machine dies vs a more expensive, better built one. Also, water/electric useage comes into the picture. With rising cost of both in a lot of countries, electric definitely in the UK, that's worth keeping in mind too :)

AEG machines are made in the Zanussi factory in Italy, as are the Bendix and Electrolux machines...the parent company being Electrolux. AEG machines are overpriced Zanussi, and are in no way compaarable with the machines of the past. The current crop I would not touch full stop.

Miele is the best, but the Siemens machihnes are good and much better than the Bosch label, although both are from the Siemens group.

Ariston-Indesit now own Hotpoint..........all 3 labels I would run away from. However if price is your marker just remember to start saving for the replacement you will need in 2-5 years time. (if you're lucky).

Modern machines are mostly cheap and nasty, but sadly not cheap to repair when they go wrong.

As I said, Miele is the best, and their price reflects their suggested life expenctancy of 20 years.

End of the day, you pays your money you takes your choice. I know where my money would go.

ps..as for stand alone condenser driers, I consider them more gentle on the clothes which is why even though I have mine on an outside wall and venting would easily be possible I have a Miele condenser drier.

Thankyou kind sir:)

All depends on yer budget really..

If you have loads of cash, buy Miele.

Higher end Bosch or AEG

Mid range, buy Zanussi (latest range is pretty damned good and reliable)

AVOID - Hoover, Merloni (Indesit, Ariston or Hotpoint) and Beko.

Only buy a washer dryer if you are planning on using the dryer feature on odd occasions rather than daily.

Overall I'd go for either Bosch or Zanussi

'course only my opinion and each to their own.

What do you know about Servis machines??

What do you know about Servis machines??

As with all the cheap machines, they serve a purpose. However the spares can be expensive, and longevity of life isn't good.

When I started in the white goods game 24.5 years ago, most washers were around

We bought a Zanussi washer (condenser)dryer about 5 years ago, 3 1/2 years in we had the bearing(s) replaced, possible that we over loaded it one to many times...

Anyway in the winter time the dryer is the only way we have of getting the washing dry so now we have 2 kids it gets alot of (ab)use... It is now starting to develop problems with the push button program selection and rather than have it repaired I'm tempted to replace it when we move house.

My mum has always stuck to Zanussi white goods and I'm going to buy another Zanussi washer as we've really abused this one for 5 years and it's still going (just) and we'll have the space to get a separate dryer this time :D
