HID Xenon Kits....

Featured Replies

Mods......

Do I need any permission to organise a Group Buy on some excellent HID Kits I have access to at £155 ?

  • Author

I've done that, thanks for keeping me on the right track.

Permission currently pending with the moderators......watch this space for an announcement (hopefully)......

£155 erm, its not hard to get uk based kits for £90-£130 on ebay (bought about 4 or 5 kits now!)

Perhaps though these are the bi-xenon kits?

Is it ?

5000K, 6000K or 8000K? For those that are unaware, these are the colour temperatures not simply, as it is sometimes interpreted, the 'power'.

5000K, 6000K and 8000K HID bulbs all make driving a safer and more pleasurable

experience. However, there are some differences worth mentioning as it depends on the results you're after.

5000K is the brightest and most "white" of the choices. 6000K's are also very bright and white but also emit a purplish hue. 8000K's, while still much brighter than

conventional Halogen lights, offer a distinctively blue eye pleasing look.

The kits I will offer are true dual xenon, on both high and low beam.

Many on eBay are not, or have any approval codes.

I'm sure if you keep looking you'll find a set for £50....but would you run the risk of having them on your car ?

Generally the less you spend the poorer the quality and the greater the opportunity for niggles or poor performance, total failure or even serious safety issues.

The ones I will offer have a full 12 month warranty and are from a supplier who tested and rejected many kits before choosing to retail these.

Thanks for opening up the debate, though.

Maybe it is a good idea to list the supplier? So people can see what they will be buying into?

Whoever the supplier is, it is of little relevance. I've simply come to an arrangement with them for the supply of ten of the kits at the price stated.

People can see what they are 'buying into' - the details and specifications are quite clear as is the price.

If any further information is required I'm more than happy to supply it.

Thanks for your input, though.

I'm just playing devils advocate here, but with members parting £155 of their hard-earned, I could imagine a few doubts as to 1) you are genuine, 2) the *real* price, 3) whoever the warranty is...

Just some food for thought.

Is there a version of this for the Octy II?

Also note that MoT stations are now, (it is believed) to be required to check the headlights for DFT approval.

HID's have to have CE approval, be self leveling either in the lamp unit or the cars self leveling suspension, and have a self cleaning system (jets or wipers)

I notice that M.A.C's do have CE (although may not be the correct one to be legal in this country) approval but do the ones on ebay.

Oh and the whole lamp has to have the correct approval. You are not allowed to just change the internals and keep the old cluster.

Andy

From the DfT:

December 2006

Aftermarket HID headlamps

In the Department's view it is not legal to sell or use after market HID lighting kits, for converting conventional Halogen headlamps to HID Xenon. If a customer wants to convert his vehicle to Xenon HID he must purchase completely new Xenon HID headlamps. The reason for this is that the existing lens and reflector are designed around a Halogen filament bulb, working to very precise tolerances. If one places a HID "burner" (bulb) in the headlamp, the beam pattern will not be correct, there will be glare in some places and not enough light in other places within the beam pattern.

The following is the legal rationale:

The Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 regulate the situation in the UK.

Under these Regulations, HID/Gas Discharge/Xenon headlamps are not mentioned and therefore they are not permitted according to the strict letter of the law.

However new vehicles have HID headlamps. This is because they comply to European type approval Regulations. The UK cannot refuse to register a vehicle with a European type approval. These are to ECE Regulation 98 (for the HID headlamps which are tested on a rig in a laboratory) and ECE Regulation 48 (Lighting Installation on the vehicle).

For the after market, a used vehicle cannot obtain type approval because it is only applicable for new vehicles. However we feel that saying "HID is banned in the after market" would not be reasonable. Instead we should make analogies with new vehicles. It would be reasonable to require HID in the after market to meet the same safety standards as on new vehicles. The same level of safety should apply.

Therefore a HID headlamp unit sold in the after market should:

1. be type approved to ECE Regulation 98 as a component.

2. when fitted to the vehicle should enable ECE Regulation 48 to be complied with (although no government inspection will take place).

3. Comply with RVLR as far as "use" is concerned.

In practice this means:

1. The headlamp unit (outer lens, reflector, bulb) shall be type approved to ECE 98 and be "e-marked" to demonstrate this. That can only be done by the headlamp supplier - Hella, Valeo etc. who must test the headlamp in an independent laboratory.

2. Once fitted to the vehicle it must have headlamp cleaning and self-levelling (which can be for the headlamp or can be in the vehicle suspension - some expensive estate cars have "self-levelling suspension" and that is adequate). Also the dipped beam must stay on with the main beam.

3. The headlamp must be maintained in good working order, kept clean, and aligned/adjusted correctly like any other headlamp.

Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 it is an offence to supply, fit or use vehicle parts which are not legal.

In summary it is not permitted to convert an existing halogen headlamp unit for use with HID bulbs. The entire headlamp unit must be replaced with one designed and approved for use with HID bulbs and it must be installed in accordance with the rules stated above.

Whoever the supplier is, it is of little relevance.

Might be little relevance to you but it is to me.

Assuming they do a version for the Octy II can you please advise who they are? And will dealings be directly with the supplier (contract / warranty etc) or with yourself?

These are for the MK1 Octavia.

The warranties will of course be with the supplier, (your receipt is your contract).

!. I am a fellow forum community member.

You can collect these kits from me if you are local. Payment is made by Paypal (which is a secure transaction.)

2. The 'real price' is the price they are listed for. I am not marking them up. This can be verified by the moderators.

3. It is a standard 12 month warranty rather like those offered on any piece of electrical equipment.

Any more questions, please ask.

Guys, this Group Buy has been approved by the Moderators (thanks !) and is now 'Live'.

Please see the Group Buy section of this forum for full details and thanks for your interest,

Mark.

Thanks for opening up the debate, though.

You will find that 99% of hid kits are made by the same people reboxed, if i remember correctly, the ones i bought had a 2 year warranty and when a had a faulty ballast he sent me out a new one straight away, no hassles

I cant believe a GB on this got approved when you are being this shifty about the supplier. Look at all the other deals, and they clearly say who the parts are coming from. clearly you have made a deal to buy a job lot from an ebay supplier, with both of you making a profit from it.

And a join date of Jan 2007 is way suspicious for someone suddenly starting a group buy. so maybe, just maybe, YOU are an ebay supplier, and thats why you cant detail the source?

  • Author

I think I need the intervention of the mods here. This clown is attempting to ruin a perfectly legitimate approved group buy.

  • Author

What a welcome to the forum !

In fact I'll tell you what, **** it !

Group buy cancelled.

Are you bitter, or jealous or both ?

For the record I am not an Ebay trader.

I bought my Skoda three weeks ago hence the join date and started looking for the best HID kit. The nearest equivalent I found cost £235.

I found a supplier who promised to do me a good deal in the future on other parts if I could promote these kits via the forum.

They are advertised at the current retail price and I was not due to make a profit on these.

Or maybe you think the pic in the avatar is not my car ?

A prominent forum member has been to my house and seen the car.

Casting aspersions about the ability of moderators to approve group buys should go down well......

Well done ! I hope you are satisfied now.

Remind me, when did you become a forum member....?
