Problems with Cruise

Featured Replies

The main steeler fitted cruise to my vRS last week and I am having the same problems with it as I did with the system in the other MY2004 vRS I briefly had before Christmas (another long story.....)

The problem is this; the stalk is different to that shown in the users manual (which matches the system I have fitted to my MY2004 Passat TDI), but on the face of it seems easy to use.

The slider turns the system on and off as you would expect and is also labelled as 'Resume' when pulled as far out as it will go.

The problem is with the large button at the end of the stalk. On the Passat system this is the same as the button that operates the trip computer in that it has two buttons, one at the top and one at the bottom. On the trip computer this takes you one way or the other through the options on the trip computer, and on the cruise is for 'Set' and 'Resume'.

However this cruise system just has one button marked as 'Set', but whether this is briefly pressed, or pressed for a few seconds makes no difference it doesn't set the speed.

For something that appears so simple I am struggling to see what I can be doing wrong???

Hopefully the above is understandable and thought it worth asking before approaching the dealer, although it is booked in for Monday & Tuesday next week to have the leaking boot looked at.

Cheers

Put the slider to the 'on' position. You need to be over 15mph for it to work. Once you are and have achieved the speed you want press the set button on the end.

Wouldn't worry about it looking different to the manual, they still work in the same fashion. There are a couple of variants out there.

If this doesn't work then you would need to have it checked either at the dealer or by VAG-COM to check the measured values.

I would have thought that the dealer would have checked it's operation before handing it back.

Thanks Stu, the dealer said they had road tested it and it all worked fine.

I have had another fiddle on the way to work this morning and have found that the button on the end marked 'Set' doesn't actually do anything???

I am able to set the speed by pulling the slider as far across as it will go (marked as 'Resume') - it then stores the desired speed. If there is any need to disengage cruise, repeating the same action (pulling the slider as far across as it will go) resumes the previously stored speed.

Seems a little bemusing as to why the button on the end performs no function????

I think you're pressing the end button for to long.

The set button also acts to reduce the desired speed, so pressing it for too long will activate cruise then reduce the desired speed. You'll probably think it hasnt worked and continue driving normally which will then cancel the cruise mode.

Find a nice flat road, drive at a steady speed, press "set" briefly, remove feet from pedals.

The slider switch can be pressed to the left to increase the set speed or pressed to the right against the spring to turn cruise off. Pressing it hard to the right, past the click will disable cruise altogether.

Depressing the clutch or brake will disable cruise, as will driving above the set speed for a given number of seconds (its about a minute, I think). Cruise will also disable if it thinks its going to stall the car (hills in 5th gear etc.)

The Octavia cruise isnt the best in the world (some vauxhall cruise uses the brakes etc. Skoda doesnt) but it is great for motorways etc.

I'll give it a go not pressing it for too long and see what happens

Thanks.

I agree with Goochie.

My 54 vrs has the same system you describe and when I first had it took me a while to get used to the button on the stalk.

Quite a lot I would press it, let off the loud pedal and the car would slow down but now I seem to have got the knack of it as it doesn't do this any more :) .

I never really switch the slider to "off" and just press the button to set my desired speed then either brake if needed and reset when safe by pressing set again (if the speed has changed) or move the slider to the left briefly which re-instates the previous speed.

I also find on the journey home (long A road with lots of traffic varying between 40-60mph) that I can control the speed completely on cruise by moving the slider right briefly and then pressing set again when a safe speed has been reached to keep distance with the traffic, and also press left to increase speed as necessary (usually 1 push is about 1mph on gps).

Hope this helps!

OK, an update for those that are interested.

It appears that the button on the end of the stalk marked SET, doesn't actually set the speed, only decrease it.

The slider which switches cruise on and off and resume the pre-set speed also acts as the Set button.

If the slider is pulled briefly as far over to the left as it will go it sets the speed, if it is pulled over and held it resumes the previously set speed.

Seems strange to cram all funtions that you would want to use onto the same slider, but at least I know it works.

That doesn't sound like OEM function to me.

Sounds like they've wired it incorrectly to me.

Point them in our direction and we'll tell them how it should be done.
