MOT help needed

Featured Replies

Hullo

One for Mr K I reckon.

I've been warned that my tinted sunstrip could be an MOT failure as it incurs on the swept area of my windscreen. It's not a blacked out sunstrip, just quite heavily tinted and is damn useful for driving into the sun when normally it would "peek" around the visor/s. It comes down to about the area where the rear view mirror sticks onto the screen, say about 6" - 7" from the top. So, what's the chance of this sunstrip making it through an MOT? I've removed the side tints which makes me legal again (I thought) but now the sunstrip has got me worried... (and the MOT is due in six weeks time)

Jason, post a pic of the front of your car.

Damn - I haven't got one at hand...

Anyone else get a piccie of the sunstrip at the recent midlands meet?

Just get the MOT done at a "friendly place" - if it fails, they'll give you the chance to remove the sunstrip then pass it.

Rob.

Either that or get smaller wiper blades :D

If the area covered by the wiper blades has any sunstrip in it, you should - in theory - receive a failure on your MOT.

Either remove the sunstrip (with your trusty hair-dryer), fit shorter wiper blades, or find a friendly garage to perform the MOT (hopefully they'd overlook it or allow you to remove it if necessary).

My strip would deffo fail - and TBH when at lights, it does make it hard to see them if they're close to the car (rather than across the junction). Does a good job of keeping the sun out of my eyes though..... :)

seriously, would putting smaller "temporary" wiper blades get me through? :D

(I'll shove some mini-ones on in the short run...)

It says tinting films are not a reason for failure on the website posted by DGW

Jason' date=' the relevant page from The (MOT) Testers Manual is here:

http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_830.htm

 Denis. What a find. I wasn't sure if there was an official MOT site or not but this looks good to me.

Additional mirrors and tinting films

Additional mirrors and tinting films are not subject to Reason for Rejection 1.

To be on the safe side nip down to the garage before the test and ask, if they are helpful they may be able to tell.In the past i used a race prepared car on the road and found that the interpretation of the rules did vary, although it should not.I found this approach saved some problems.

Jason, I posted that MOT info (which is iin our Links section) solely so that you could work out whether or not the sunstrip is an MOT fail. I have no idea whether or not the test will be amended to cater for the recent change in law regarding tint fim.

Alternatively:

Additional opaque films are subject to reason for rejection 1 whether fitted on the inside or outside of fhe windscreen.
says otherwise!

So is your sunstrip an opaque film, or an additional mirror/tinting film? :D

yep but have to give you a reasonable "drivers view"

a reasonable "drivers view"

and the bonnet of a Fabia could never do that

Its a tinting sunstrip... - deffo not opaque - Just does a good job of keeping the sun out of my eyes.

Denis - no worries now about tinted side windows as I've got rid of them, its just this damn sunstrip, which I quite like now. :D

Should in theory be OK. Depends what mood the tester is in I spose. I can't see any reason in failing it if you can see through it. Steve's on the other hand.......... :P

If that is a problem, fitting smaller wiper blades, say an inch or 2 shorter should be enough to pass as it will no longer be in the swept area! ;)

or better still remove windscreen before the test can't fail then can it!! btw you can do this if its not fitted you can't test it belive me i know

This is very true. The car doesn't need the screen to pass an MOT! Just don't forget those driving goggles!! :drivesaf:

Might be worth mentioning the lack of a screen to the MOT tester - he will not be impressed when he gets a face full of water when he hits the screen wash button. :D

I enjoy getting people to stand behind the car to check my lights when I have a car in with misaligned washer jets! :D

Always good for a laugh to watch them jump out of the way after already being soaked! :P

Alternatively, when you're in a two lane queue, wait until your car is slightly in front of a car with its sunroof fully open and a quick blast of the washer makes them jump if you've got your aim right.

Even better if you have headlamp washers and switch the lights on first :D

Not that I'd do such a thing. No! Definitely not. Not me...
