The vent has been cut out of the TT wheel arch liner.

The side mounted intercooler is behind that wheel arch , and it works best with a good flow of cold air over it.

Allowing air through the liner helps this , so when the car is driven hard on hot days it will help prevent heat soak which can sap your power a bit.

It's only going to make a small difference but every little helps
