Had an interesting chat with someone earlier and we were on about car maintenance, running costs, tyres etc.

Personally I dont put any money aside and just pay the bills when they come along, but I know some people put a fixed sum away each month to prepare them for road tax, tyres, servicing etc.

I think the latter is probably the most sensible ides but for me would do nothing but make me realise how espensive cars are to keep on the road for a month.

I have put that i pay as and when something needs doing.

If i started saving monthly, after the second month, i would just go and spend it on something i really DONT need, so i dont bother even trying.

i allways fix it straight away if it goes wrong, but then it is a lot cheaper when you do the work yourself... i suppose it would be easy to let repairs got unattended what with the cost of garage/workshop time nowadays

Have to say I keep a base of 120 quid in my "car account" just in case I require a new tyre or something out of the blue

I put £150 a month into a car account, usually means at the end of a year we have some spare cash too although cam belt is needed on the Golf before it goes so that's gonna take a chunk out of the account this March....

I put £40 a month into an online saver for car maintenance and tax, but to be fair it is still under warranty, and when its not I'll do any repairs myself.

I dont think for one minute that £40 a month is a big enough amount, but it certainly lessens the blow should a big bill come in.

I don't have a specific car savings account , but I do pay a fair amount into my savings each month. When I need to pay for something on my car it depends on how much spare cash I have in my current account. If I can afford to I'll pay for it from that , but if not then it comes from my savings

I pay as I go. My big car bills all fall due in February/March - annual service, tax, insurance. Thankfully there's no council tax to pay in February/March, so that money gets diverted to the car.

If I know consumables will be required soon (tyres, brakes, etc) then I try to put a bit extra aside, or for big items withdraw it from general savings. Unexpected consumables go on the credit card and I make do with less beer money the following month.

This month has seen service (planned), cambelt (planned), tyres (two planned), tyres (two unplanned :( ), ARB (unplanned). Still got tax and insurance to cough up for, and disks and pads needed soon too :( :( :(

Pay as I go.

just pay as and when. Never really thought about separate 'car money'

Last year I saved

I put

Id rather just pay it when it comes... altho certain things... like cambelts and clutches  need to be budgeted and saved up for

I save

I just pay the bills in full when they arrive - hurts a bit when insurance is due though

Saving for car maintenance and car enhancements at about 50 quid/month each. However it only makes a little dent in the bill usually :o

That said although insufficient, it means it reduces the cost of servicing relative to that month's salary.

With the big stuff happening recently though, I've just got to find a way of paying for it - which will blow the concept out of the water for a while again.

I pay as I go, but do most of my work myself unless it needs a ramp or welding.

I try to have a floating lump sum available from one month to the next. TBH though, the 320 is due some major fettling, so i'd been sticking by plenty dough, and its all bought now. All I have to do now is fit all the stuff!

However, in the last week i have aquired 2x new BMW's and had to service my bro's felicia and dad's avensis.

Spend more on oil and sparkplugs per week than on food!

I put

i get a car allowance and that includeds maintanance so i should save for each service. i normally end up wasting my money on buying food and other crap

I'm going to start putting as much as i can away for the car and holiday and house into a savings fund.
