New TFT monitor help....

Featured Replies

Hello all.

I am after a new TFT screen for me computer, I really need a big one (screen that is) for CAD.

Looking at a few here, just wondered what everyone else thought of these?

I've looked at the 23" LG one and it's massive!

Any other screens you would recommend?

Thanks:)

I've had a couple of LG monitors over the years, and they are spot on. I'm using a 20" Dell now, and its so clear and crisp. Maybe worth a thought.....

Like Shifty said, definitely worth taking a look at Dell. I also use one of their Ultrasharp 20" widescreens at home and have bought loads of their 17" and 19" screens for work.

They've got a bit of a promotion going on now too: Dell

If you want quality, look at the NEC Multisync range,

I am now on my second, these have DVI input, if you have digital output on your graphics card.

My original 17" NEC is currently being used by one of the other members of the family, and it is approx 5 yrs old, still working perfectly.

I checked out the PC pro web site for their best buys, beofre purchase.

the 23" one may be massive but it's very low resolution according to that link.

The Dell 20" widescreen monitor here is excellent 20_inch_TFT_Flat_Panels

and the 24" one is even better

I use the 20" version at home , and it's a lovely display.

Pin sharp with very good colours and the 24 is basically the same but even bigger and better.

These are the same panels as used in Apple's cinema screen displays

How about an Apple display... they come in 20, 23 and 30 inch..

Clicky.. Not cheap but you get what you pay for. :)

EDIT: Doh!! just read the last bit of Dr Zoidberg's post... If you can get the same display as the Apple ones elsewhere cheaper

What sort of CAD are you doing?

If colour is important you will want an eizio or something specifically designed for the CAD/CAM market.

If not i would suggest viewsonic or any other manufacturer who makes a screen that comes with a zero dead pixel guarantee. Then narrow these manufacturers down to a screen you really like.

Can I ask why widescreen? Being a fellow CAD user, I find a regular 21" Dell flatscreen thing spot on.

I have a Dell W1900 (19" widescreen with tv tuner etc) for home, and its pretty poor on the resolution front. A genuine waste of £650.

Depends...

Im using a 20" dell at the moment but actually prefer it to the 24" dell i usually have.

The 20" is MUCH cheaper than the bigger ones.. and has 1600x1200 resolution and is a better panel than the 24, which might be what you prefer for CAD work.

also check out aria.co.uk, they usually have decent deals on dell TFT.. dont buy from them tho, go back to dell and they will usually pricematch if you get a decent rep on the phone ;)

Tom, is that a trick question? Widescreen = more actual working space when toolbars etc are open.

A lot of the CAD boys use two screens! One for toolbars one for the working drawing.

But one big ol' screen *should* be enough for me ;)

I have ordered the new 24" Dell from the link Dr Z posted

So hopefully this baby will be arriving soon:

HOME: Dell Ultrasharp 2407WFP 24" widescreen LCD Flat Panel Monitor.450 cd/m² brightness, 1000:1 contrast, 16ms (black-to-white) response time. Black TCO99

Thanks for the help as always!

Excellent , let us know how you find it when it arrives and you've had a play
