brake caliper guide bolts

Featured Replies

I bought some EBC green stuff brake pads for my Fabia VRS (standard brakes).

To rotate the brake cailper (type C54-II) up to allow the pads to be replaced the lower guide pin bolt must be removed on each side. The Haynes manual says discard old bolts and insert new ones.

Why ??

They are only torqued up to 30nm, surely a bit of thread lock on the old ones would be OK.

I ask this as the EBC pads dont come with new bolts (unhelpful) and my nearest SEAT or Skoda dealer is miles away. The local VW dealer wasnt any help (couldnt identify my caliper on his computer).

Does anyone know if there is a corresponding VW part number or what the Skoda number is for these bolts.

PS Modern Haynes manuals are rubbish compared with those of the past; lack detailed instructions, poor contrast in photos and lack of exploded line drawings.

The reason they say replace the bolts is that they are pre treated with thread lock. So if you have thread lock to put on the old bolts they you are fine.

The caliper is used on the Polo GT for future reference.

Yes, I used my old bolts on the MPi although this wasn't a sound idea, just that for some reason EBC don't supply em. Actually in comparison Halford's kits werent that much more, and theirs included the replacement kit presumably with bolts, and was a reasonable brand too.

Of course that was standard brakes though, not performance.

If you get locking thread compound it is necessary to hold the bolts from vibrating loose, otherwise get replacements.

Thanks for your help chaps. I'll get to work on the brakes asap.

Ok. New EBC pads in place, and I'm happy - better initial bite but still smooth.

Its just that none of the guide pin bolts had any form of thread lock on - they came undone with only a little effort with a small spanner.

I've had it from new and the brakes have not been touched.

Anyway used the bolts again - after a little clean up, plus thread lock and torque wrenched to 30nm - which isnt much.

They aint a massive bolt are they?

Thats usually a good indication they wont be that tight.
