Octavia II ashtray housing removal.

Featured Replies

Hi,

I recently bought a Tom Tom and am happy with the hands free phone operation and the ipod connectivity - suits me just fine.

I do find it a pain to keep having to remove the Tom Tom everytime I leave the car for fear of theft - someone has already tried at a petrol station when I left it in the car for no more than 3 mins!

So - I want to mount the Tom Tom in that very convenient looking space call the ash tray and be able to hide it by closing the flap. After removing the tray itself the housing doesn't quite provide enough space as it is. Has anyone removed the housing and does this leave more space? Alternatively I could modify the housing by chopping out some of the base to give more space.

Ideas anyone please? :)

Cheers

Colin

What I thought about doing (before I got the MFD2) was try and house it in the tray above the Hazard light Switch - but couldn't work out how to keep the flip lid and loose the base....

a bit of a james bond type feel - press the lid and the tomtom appears (cool?)

I was also unable to remove the ash tray significantly so gave up !

I don't think either spaces are big enough to house a unit.

Get an MFD2 and be done with it!.

Removing the ashtray holder is easy. Take off the gear shift glove by pulling the front of it upwards then it'll come away easily with a bit of a snap as it's held in place by plastic clips all attached to the base of the glove.

There's two screws revealed which hold the ash tray housing in place - take these out and pull the unit towards you.

This reveals quite a large space to put a Tom Tom or similar in.

I "modified" the ash tray housing so the Tom Tom would fit, ran the cables and hey presto a hidden Tom Tom when the ash tray flap is down. Didn't even need an external aerial for the signal.

The tricky bit is switching the Tom Tom on and off as the switch is top of unit on left and leaving a big gap to get a pinkie in wasn't going to look good. I made up something which allows me to operate the switch easily.

I LOVE a good bodge! ;)

Colin,

Can you post some pictures ?

I also have a DSG gearbox, is it the same principle?

Some quick pics - as you can see I still have to trim around the Tom Tom to smarten it up - on the hunt for something suitable - nice bit of leather would do it I think. Flexible material would be best as the surface is curved.

The photo of the space under the ashtray housing doesn't show the depth well - it's a two minute job to get to it - take a look. You can see the two screws you need to remove then just pull the housing towards you.

@ColinF ... Quick clarification, did you carve away the base of the ashtray holder to take the TomTom? I've just recently stumbled across thus post of yours and thought I'd give it a try. As you described, the tray comes out easily enough, but there still doesn't seem to be sufficient room to swallow a Go910 on it's own, never mind with the charging base ;-( Did you cut down the mount, too?
