Bought my first SKODA

Rob,

having an engine relating to/being the same as to that in the GTI also gives a wealth of tuning possibilities.

If your so inclined of course.

Cheers.

Adrian.

What would you suggest are the first steps to extracting more from the normally aspirated 1.6 :?:

Paul

VW did it by boring the engine out to a 1.8 - don't know if you'd

fancy trying that! :P

I'm sure getting rid of those cats in the exhaust would help somehow, but

my main concern of messing around with the exhaust (other than

the cost!) is reducing the amount of torque...

Rob, I'm pretty sure the Astra was an 8-valver as it has the wonderful Vauxhall Hi-Torq engine. Might be wrong though... :D Micra was definitely 16v as it had it plastered on every window and panel! :D:D

Just had another look on the 'net and the best clue I could

find was on Parkers - it shows the 1.4Hi-T as a 60bhp engine,

while the 1.4 16v is shown explicitly as a 90bhp engine. So I

suppose it would be possible that it was an 8-valver...

I suppose to put an entirely accurate context on the valve discussion it is necessary to specify a date. As time roles on there are more and newer engines being made available, there is certainly a strong move towards the 16 valve (or 4 per cylinder) layout. I think it's fair to say that the Japanese manufacturers started this ball rolling before most of the Europeans, in mass produced cars at least. Of course the Italians have had a liking for 16 valves in their high performance 4 pot motors since the begining of time!

I remain convinced that a 4 pot 16 valver (without breathing apparatus!) may well be an efficient engine overall but they are not the best at low-down-grunt, they do like (need) to be revved high to get the most from them. Every time I drive my 1.6litre 8 valve I'm surprised at how flexible it is. Can't imagine how I'd feel if I had an Octy with one of the more exciting motors.:D
