I'm a recent new Skoda owner too, bought an Octavia Estate 3 weeks ago. Just a bit newer than the one you have bought. It's great to watch folks look at the car, then look again when they see the badge. Mine is white with alloys and it's turned a few heads already :D

For the sticker go to the home page the instructions are all there....

Have fun

Paul

hi and congrats on your purchase. welcome to briskoda!

I,m doing the opposite of you guys and just trading in my Octy 98 GLXI TDI estate in dark met blue, well clean in and out, towbar, service history and 25,000 genuine miles for a Superb TDI 130. If my Superb is as reliable as the Octy I will be very happy, likewise I hope your Octys are just as reliable as mine has been.

Cheers.

By the way the dealer offered me

Cheers guys.

I think I paid a fair price for it, its in about 98% top condition for its age and mileage. (Got

Skoda owners do sometimes acknowledge each other.

When I got my very first, which was a fabia at the month of Launch, every other fabia I passed flashed their lights, which was quite charming really.

To this day, 3 years later my new fabia still get's people coming up to me to talk about it.

Now you wouldnt get that with a Polo or Fiesta would you!

It appears you had the car I was looking for! :D Such is life......

Too late now, I have my white Octy Estate 1.6GLXi (30k and FSH) on the driveway, the only compromise I made when choosing the car was that I would really have liked the TDi; at the time of looking there were none around in my price range. Still I'm enjoying my new car, after driving a lot of hire car 1.4 and 1.6 16 valvers recently (Vauxhall, Renault, Rover etc) My 1.6 8 valver feels like a diesel. These new 16 valvers don't seem to have much 'low end' pull in them; by comparison my new motor has plenty at the low end. If anything I'd say it's a bit under geared, 75mph shows at 3500rpm, it feels as though it could pull a taller top gear, though it does give good acceleration. Anyhow for the time being I'm very happy with the motor and like a dog with the proverbial two .........'s !!!

Paul,

So do you know if your engine is a Skoda engine, rather than VW one?

Mine's the 16v one, so I'd be interested in comparing :D Mine seems

to have plenty of low-end, certainly it wheelspins easily, but that might

just be down to the dismal state of the roads round here!

Think mine might have longer gears/more top-end though, as 3500

usually takes me over 80i, notthatIdrivethatfastofficer...

I have thought it would be nicer with a 6th gear for motorway cruising

though...

I've just bought a Octavia 2.0 Ambiente Hatchback in Silver, it is 18 months old and has done 12K, I got it for

Never understood why Octavia's mid-ranger is called Ambiente, while in the Fabia and Superb ranges it's Comfort.

Also never understood why the L&K marque isn't rolled out either.

I believe I have the 101bhp 1.6 in 8v form. I'm very familiar with VW motors and I'm sure it's an 8v lurking under the large plastic engine cover. I was going to lift the cover and have a look just for fun, it seems I've got a good reason to look now! :D What are the 'tell tales' for the Skoda engine?

Managed to get into the chat room just now with one of the Mac's. Just downloaded a 'beta' of new Mac OS web browser "Safari" It has made the site seem a lot smoother and got me into the chat room! There was no one else there so I had a conversation with myself! (the doctor said that was OK and I should keep taking the tablets )

Couldn't really say - in fact, I think the only reason I think mine is a 16v

is because when I've had the bonnet up I seem to recall possibly that

I might've seen "16v" written on the plastic cover. But considering it's

also a 1.6, I might just be remembering the right numbers meaning

the wrong things :D Mine does have "SR" on the cover though...

It has made the site seem a lot smoother and got me into the chat room!

Good good...I know it must be tough being a lone Mac man in an

IBM-compatible world... :P

Rob.

But considering it's also a 1.6, I might just be remembering the right numbers meaning the wrong things Mine does have "SR" on the cover though... [/quote:2b84540fd1]

Sad person that I am I've just been out and lifted the bonnet on mine and was greated by a large Skoda badge on the plastic engine cover AND lettering "1.6 - SR" I'm now pretty sure it is a 1.6 8v engine, not sure what the SR stands for but there are 2 versions of the 1.6 this one produces 101 bhp while the other version is good for 75bhp

As for loan Mac man, well that's in keeping with being 'not one of the crowd' as is my ownership of a Skoda, maybe the rest of the world will catch up with me one day

Paul

If in doubt about the engine, have a look at the engine details on the Vehicle Data sticker inside the front cover of the Service Schedule, or on the boot floor. It gives the engine output plus engine code.

Well, the plot thickens.

It does sound like both mine and Paul's have the same engine in them,

however I'm still convinced mine is a 16v. Again, no actual reason

why I think this - the only "relevant" information I could find in my

paperchase was that the salesman had written "MPI" on the sales

document.

So it could be complete nonsense, but usually I thought MPI meant

multi-point injection, so ruling out 8v (at least, on a 4 cyl engine :D ).

Rob.

Actually Rob, with your last reply it gets much easier.....

MPI multi point injection - means a seperate injector for each cylinder; some fuel injection systems have a single injector that sits in place of the the carburettor (serving all cylinders) hence Single Point Injection and so the need to differentiate between the two types..I think we've cracked this one now  :D

Paul

So the idea is...

All the 1.6 engines are 8v, but the 102bhp version has MPI, while the

75bhp has/had a single injector?

It would make sense, but also make the Skoda the first car I've ever

owned with less than 16 valves!

Rob.

I'm sure we're correct on the 102bhp, to be honest I'm not sure how the power is reduced to 75bhp. If you look at the engine specs in the rest of the VAG range you'll 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 all in 8v format. Then they seem to jump straight to the high performance 20v layout (I'd like to see the cylinder head with 5 valves per cyclinder!)

So what was your first Skoda :?:

I haven't had a whole lot of luck finding the engine specs for the VAG

range, at least in terms of valves!

The current Skoda is my first Skoda, though I'm sure both my Micra and

Astra were 16v.

Well, I think that's this topic well and truly hi-jacked!

Rob.

Rob

Both the Micra and Astra have been using 16v engines for some time. I think if you trace the heritage of your VAG 1.6 8v engine you'll find it goes back maybe 20 years or so. I'm happy with that because it tends to suggest they haven't found a reason to change from an established formula.... :driving:

Paul

Current petrol engines in the Skoda Octavia brochure are:

1.4 MPI/75hp 4 valves/cylinder

1.6 MPI/102bhp 2 valves/cylinder

2.0 MPI/115bhp 2 valves/cylinder

1.8 20v Turbo/150bhp 5 valves/cylinder

1.8 20v Turbo/180bhp 5 valves/cylinder

I didn't think that there was a 75bhp 1.6 VAG source engine? Probably is though given VAGs record.

I know that there is a 1.6 mpi 8v which produced 100bhp and was originally used in the Polo saloon which was thought rather strange at the time as there was also a 100bhp 1.4 16v (Polo 1.4 16v h/b funnily enough  ).

The 1.6 does go way back in VAG history and was probably used in some form in the original Golf GTI.

I think that the 2l 8v block goes a long way back too and was based on the 1.8 block from the mark2 Golf GTI. Quite probably this block has it's roots in the 1.6

Food for thought and probably waaaaay off topic.

Cheers.

Adrian.

Denis What a gentleman you are :D

That should save any more peaking under the bonnet.

From memory of reading it on Parkers this morning, the 75bhp was on

the LXi and the 102bhp on the GLXi, or something like that :)

I guess having an engine that was previously in a Golf GTi (back when

they were fast  ) should console me, as it means I have a hot

hatch of sorts. And without having to worry about coilpacks. :P
