Capri bonnets

Featured Replies

Hi all I need some info and I am hoping some car nut can steer me in the right direction ;)

I am currently restoring a MK3 Capri and I need a bonnet, thing is to get a new one (if I can find one) I would have to re mortgage my house!! I have seen a few suitable ones on ebay in the past but they have been too far away to collect :thumbdwn: . But I have seen a MK2 bonnet going at the moment but will it fit??

So to all you car bores out there can anyone help?? Does anyone know??

Will a MK2 bonnet fit a MK3 Capri......... Cheers Jim.

i think the easy answer would be no ,probably different around the lights , but if i were you check on the forums that deal with the Capri as there will be someone more knowledgable about them on there , although there are very knowledgable people on here

The Mk2 bonnet will fit but the leading edge around the headlights is shaped differently as mentioned above.

Jim,

Having owned seven Capris over the years including a Mk2 the answer is a definite no. The leading edge as others have said is the wrong profile and the hassle of altering it to fit is a real nightmare. Some people have been known to change a Mk2 to Mk3 front end, but rarely the other way. This involves replacing the front wings, valence and bonnet, and costs a fortune.

Capri Club International has a huge amount of spares, but at a premium unfortunately. One reason I sold my 2.8 was the fact spares were getting so expensive. There was a time when a Capri ( aka Crapi ) and everything on them cost nothing to replace. Somehow, things have changed and a good 2.8 now commands more than a 2003 Octavia vRS!

You could try GMS Spares in Durham, Neville used to run it, I'm not sure if he still does. Good luck in your search and if you have time put some pics up for us to look at.

All the best,

Andrew.

How I miss them all. This is one of the two 3.0s I used to have. Great cars.

I dont know if youre a member of CCI , but they used to have adverts from various breakers in the club mag , also people used to sell parts in the classifieds in there too. I was a member for over 10 years , I did get some bits from GMS Capri Spares , but I dont know if they are still going. I had 4 Capris in total , a 1.6 Laser , a 2.0S , a 2.8i Special , and my favourite , a 280 'Brooklands'...here she is sunning herself near the Tweed estuary in 1999.

Looks great! I never could quite afford/justify the extra expense of a Brooklands. I do miss the burble of the V6, especally through the performance manifolds and exhausts. The 3 litre was my favourite, it made old people angry and young children cry.

Happy days....

Ive had 3 capris loved them all but doubt I will ever own another one.

I had a pre facelift 1969 gt xlr beautiful car....

1978 ish 3.0 Ghia standard condition

1980?? 3.0 Ghia with moulded Kat body kit modified engine and 8" wide alleykat wheels.

Wonderfull cars that could be brought for a weeks wages when I were a lad, not as chuckable as my RS2000, but far more fun to "cruise" in loved the way the big 3.0 burbled along doing hardly any revs. Was actually cheaper to run than my 1300 escort - as the 1300 was thrashed everywhere, to do the same speed as the 3.0 capri did at tickover :D. However if I did plant my right foot, the fuel guage could drop at an alarming rate :D.

If I was to go for a capri again I reckon it would have tobe quite heavily customised and I think these days I actually like the mk2 shape more than the mk3 probably would want something in a very 70's paint job with the old x pack kit, a vinyl roof black bonnet and maybe a mondeo ST diesel engine.. will never have the money to spare to justify such a car though. :(

Yeah, me too. The Mk2 with the X Pack looks really good. I did have an orange X Pack Mk3 3ltr which drew a lot of attention, but not in a good way. The police took an interest in it quite a few times and everywhere I went people wanted to talk. Either they had owned one, their dad had owned one, their mate had crashed one and nearly everyone said "Oohh, you have to watch them in the wet, the back end is light." I never spun a Capri when driving normally, only when I was being an idiot.

Mind you, even though the vRS isn't as much fun, there is a lot to be said about not having things to repair each month. My knuckles aren't red and all my clothes are free of oil. But if I see a Capri on the road, I still get misty eyed all over again and think,"Maybe just one more....."

Never found them so scary to drive either, But then I always had the big engines and wider tyres, I found small engined escorts (RWD) with skinny tyres more dangerous in the wet, spun them lots of times :D.

I ditched old fords for skodas on the grounds that skodas dont give anywhere near as much hassle, My last escort I went through 3 engines in about 3 months.... at least back then parts were still cheap :)

I always loved the driving position in a capri and the 6 dial dash, felt like a plane cockpit rather than a car cabin, and high door sides meant you felt more solidly protected than many other cars. Those high doors and low seats also meant they were great for parking up with girlfriends..... Reclining seats were an essential.

Definetely beuatifull cars, fun times, but I could never make the things reliable :D and prices seem to have skyrocketed. My 4th Kid is due TOMORROW, chances of capri ownership.......

My 4th Kid is due TOMORROW.......

Good luck with that mate.

Fibre glass bonnets are available from smith and deakin. The standard capri bonnets were crap, sooner or later the bonnet lip rusts.

Just adding to this that my capri is now done and on the road, It smells like an old car, is more thirsty than my vrs, makes a lot of noise, the brakes squeel, the seats are too narrow for my ****, it runs lumpy, pops fuel out of the K&N and it is slow...............................IT IS ACE !! :D:D:thumbup:

Wheres the pics?? Well done on getting it on the road! :)

I used to have a 2.8i Capri :orb_upset I still miss her now! made even worse by bits n pieces left in the garage.Picture001.jpg[/img]

Bodie, were those genuine Brooklands wheels? Did you remove the side trim yourself? It looks like a good job on that pic.

Jim VRS, post some pics - please! I still need a Capri fix every now and then. I love my Skoda, but it doesn't smell right and the back end is too fixed to the road. Wet roundabouts are no longer full of excitement and unknown outcomes.....

Wheels where CCI except for the 1 in boot which was a brooklands (wish I had kept that wheel at least) Detrimmed badly by previous owner & the improved by me. Damn I miss my 2.8 with the sound of the engine with a full stainless steel exhaust.

I have plenty of pics on my mobile but none on my camera:( . I will take some early next week( as it is sister in law's wedding on saturday) and post em up. or if anyone has an easy route to use my mobile pics I will gladly post them.

P.S mine is de trimmed too as I thought they looked to much like a dado rail

The capri will be used throughout the summer and garaged in winter, When the 2.9 engine my father in law gave me will be teased into place

Thanks mate I really love driving around with my cheap aviator shades on

As I said before compared to modern cars it drives like a dog, but because of this you really have to DRIVE the car to your destination, not just sit in it and arrive

I love it, the wife is not to sure. but it is something I am very proud of as all the work was done by my own two hands. :D
