Nope, going to wait for DSG!

Featured Replies

If not Skoda than Ford, the Focus gets it early next year. Very sad that Skoda won't do it. I know there is a problem above 240 BHP, but i want it now!

I tried it when I bought my 3.2 TT a few years ago and decided against it. I liked it initially when I test drove one but more because of the novelty value and knew that sooner or later I would regret it if I had it. I therefore went for the manual and didn't regret it a bit.

Ask most proper drivers and they will take a manual everytime because it is more involving.

I can understand why people might go for it if it is an option on the car they want but it wouldn't effect my choice of car, - i.e I could never imagine why anyone would be so hell bent on having it and make it the primary reason for buying a particular car.

BTW there is no problem over 240bhp, the TT 3.2 has 250bhp and comes with DSG as an option.

You might not be able to imagine it, but it happens. I wanted a diesel automatic. I tried out the DSG in Octavia and Golf Plus forms and bought the Octavia because it had the best automatic, with a proper manual option, that I could find at a sensible price, the Golf being no better and more expensive.

Its great in dense traffic, with a well controlled crawl, good fuel economy, and a great relief for the dodgy left knee. Its also good on the rural roads. Do I miss manual? No, the DSG does a great job and changes gear better than I can, but I still have control in those few situations where I need it.

Now, does having the best tool for the job and using appropriately mean I'm not a "proper" driver - or would you prefer me to be "more involved" and do a less efficient job?

Stick to manual if you wish by all means - but don't assume that those who choose DSG because its best in their situation are not "proper drivers". I don't see the need to insult those who make different choices to yourself. :)

Climb down of your high horse mate.

'Proper' drivers are few and far between, I don't class myself as one.

Owning a DSG 2.0tdi octavia I too must jump to the defence of the DSG Gearbox.

80 Milliseconds between power off/change gear/power on ! - virtually no power loss between gear changing - no manual driver could even think about competing with that - acceleration is incredible especially at higher speeds.

Better fuel economy !

Automatically coasts downhill.

Easier to drive means driver can devote more attention to surrounding traffic.

Tiptronic present for those who want to play gears.

Disadvantages :-

Expensive.

0.4 second delay between power down then power up again (I've never noticed this).

I promise you I will never again own a car which doesnt have a DSG gearbox.

Got it from Wikipedia - if you floor it , there is a slight pause before it takes off - I suppose it must be refering to that ?

Just a shame the Skoda doesn't have the option of flappy paddles with DSG. That would make you feel like a proper "proper driver"!

The main thing that would put me off DSG is the cost of outside-warranty claims....

Chris

Thats a fair point - I would certainly like to have the paddles (If only for show !)

Am writting to Skoda to bitch about the lack of DSG right now. I know they say VAG/Porsche are going to be running 7 speed DSG very soon......i suspect we get offered the 6 speed as a "hand me down"

BTW for the record I quite like the old DSG - just not for me!

You got one thing right love, I can claim to not know what I think.

Sorry ‘luv’, but I don’t think that’s quite what you said earlier. Sorry poppet.
