Do you have a Tom Tom?

Featured Replies

would be interested to hear how he gets on:thumbup:

OK here goes,

He got the transmitter today,

Mount looks identical to the standard screen mount, the only give away it does something else the text on the mount.

So out to his car to give it a whirl. First problem, finding a location on the FM band that doesnt have anything transmitting on it that the tomtom transmitter can use. Not easy, it would seem due to either Radio 2 or pirate stattions transmitting away. Found a quietish spot, but you could still here something if you turned the sound up loud. Well it works ok, but it needs to be on a completely clear frequency, reception was shooshing away because of the distant station.

So, it works ok just not really clear reception round where I live.

By the sounds of it, the best way is to try and get it hard wired.

Thanks Manny for the review.

You'd hope so.

I might hang back a bit to see how they get on & if there are any initial issues.

Plus i still havent figured out how the hell i want the tomtom mounted

On the Expansys site it now says Discontinued for the TomTom Car Connect. I wonder if they've canned it as it didn't work reliably?

its a shame if that is the case

I must admit, hardwiring looks like the way forward, especially in the Fabia, as the socket is in an annoying place. Got the screen in the middle so wire strung across gear stick & hand brake isn't my idea of fun. It's likely I'll ask someone about this soon :P

Hard wiring in one form of the other has to be the way forward, but i want to get rid of the suction cup on the window.... any ideas?

I just run mine on battery and have the TomTom on the right of the car with wiring going up to the sunvisor for microphone and down the door sill trim to the right-hand cubby hole for iPod.

Do you still use the window sucker mount?

I have one of these:

HTH :D

So is it hard wired, or does it run off batteries?

It runs off brain power.

Ah, i know that one..... Red Bull!

I do, yes. I'm thinking of hard wiring it into my stereo though. Hopefully I can route the aux cable round from the right hand side of the car to the stereo. I manged something similar with my old Type R, I'm not sure how easy it'll be with the Fabia though.

I've got a 510 & was contemplating getting this.....

TomTom, portable GPS car navigation systems - Car Connect

Its a bluetooth connector for the tomtom, so i'm thinking it will work nicely as a handsfree car kit with the new laws aswell.

If anybody has one it would be good to know if they are any good

The description of this appears vague though; Am I right in assuming it will connect your TomTom to car radio/stereo via Bluetooth link? (similar to the Parrot handfree etc.) If this is the case, your tomtom will need to be paired with the 'interface' device and thus not able to pair with your phone if you require it for hands-free (or vice-versa).......just worth bearing in mind.

Erm - well that was the idea for TomTom to connect to your phone and interface device (possible with Bluetooth technology) so you can use your stereo for TomTom music, directions and handsfree.

I'm not sure why its not being released now (maybe they couldn't actually get it working). Pure speculation of course!
