Hi,

Just wondering - how long do the brake discs last on the VRS? Say if you'd be doing mostly motorway miles?

Also, when would the timing belt need changing?

Thanks a lot

Rob

front discs last ages , i've done 41k which includes to track days and a trip to the Ring , replaced the pads once at about 38k , but needs another set now , due to poor quality pads fitted last time the day before a track day , doh

the rear discs will never wear out , i think most people have changed them due to rust build up on the surface as they do so little

the timing belt interval is 60k miles or X number of years , not sure on the number of years sorry

But it's worth erring on the side of caution with the timing belt. You hear of them going at 30 000 miles but that seems pretty unlucky. I do mine every 40 000. It's generally VERY expensive to repair if the belt goes.

I've done 71k in mine so far...

front discs lasted 66,000 miles (new set of pads at 33k)

rear discs are still on, but could probably do with replacing at the 80k service..

my cambelt is due at 80k (or every four years if that is first) this may vary depending on build year though...

Cambelt is 60k.... i fell in the same trap as you and was waiting for 80k

On the back of one of the service receipts (now I have the VRS) it says the 2005 model is good to 80,000 miles. I can't remember the exact text but will have a look tonight.

this is correct neo... it depends on the build date i think... mine is deffo 80k.... confirmed by more than one dealer .... 72k now and it hasn't snapped yet! lol....

I havent seen a PD belt snap as yet.

The belt should be good for 100,000 miles but they tell you to do it at 80,000 to be safe.

The belt is very wide on the TDi engine as the injectors for the PD engine are also on the cam.

The belt doesn't really need to be this wide, but it's German engineering so it should be solid.

All this talk of consumables makes me wonder.... do manufacturers deliberately make things "break, or wear" simply to keep us coming back for more.

Many a time i've thought to myself... why build a failure point into an engine, such as the timing (or cam) belt... perhaps it's because they are cheap to make this way, or is it because they like the prospect of having a few people turn their valves into a pile of shattered metal, and people over eager to replace consumables that really should last longer in this modern era.

well, theoretically, you could have a cam 'chain'..... my friend had a merc a-class (1.6 petrol) that had a cam chain, and it shouldn't have needed replacing, but it broke at 90k and ate his engine! bill for new engine £2500, but mercedes gave him some money... he still had to pay £1000 though!

edit for lummox post... that's good to hear! lol....

Back to the brakes ...

I had new front brembo disks and pads (
