Wheels For Octy 2001 4x4

Featured Replies

Hello all!

This is my first post, and after reading many of your threads, I am sure one of you will have my answers.

Q1) What is the maximum width of 18" wheel I can use and what is the best offset? (Adding a rally style wide body kit may become an option.)

Q2) Why is the wheelbase 1516mm at the front and 1492mm at the rear?

Q3) Can I put wider wheels and tyres on the rear? Or are spacers better, to keep the wheels the same size?

I have 18x8 ET35 and I wouldn't personally go wider. They fill the arches nicely so I don't spacers are necessary. I'd keep with the size all round as it's a 4wd as anything else may upset it.

Cheers for that Eddy.

Just happened to be looking at a 2001 S3 with standard fit 18's having ET32. This started me thinking of how far I could go without fouling the existing wheel arches. You know the idea. Trying to achieve an RS6 stance.

Do you think it possible achieve this?

Here's my car on it's old wheels which are also 18x8 ET35, not the best pic to show how they fill the arches but gives an idea.

Welcome to Briskoda.

1) No idea, but with a 4x4 use the same size wheels and tyres all round.

2) Because that's what the Vw Golf 4 had! More helpfully, the base platform is an FWD car, and it's normal to make the front track wider than the rear track with FWD for handling and maximum steering lock reasons.

3) Again, no idea, but I'd ca' canny with changes in track, particularly increasing the rear track, because geometric effects could lead to "interesting" new handling characteristics.

As long as the edge of the tyres don't project further than the wheel arch, the police will pull people for this as it's not allowed.

Not quite. Sidewalls can protrude but the tread can't.
