Tested the vRS

Featured Replies

Hi Gang

Ok tested the RS, mixed bag. Surprised by the lack of low down get up and go, i thought that this thing would have V8 levels of torque. Will check with VAG to see if it has a knock sender..(Running cheap Fuel?). Mind you steering good and rear end totally planted, brakes are the best non-4 pots i have ever driven! Gearbox Slow and notchy, Cabin/ driving polstion GREAT as are the seats! ....Heavy cutch

It needs 6 gears (which it won't get) and 215 (Which it will) It felt a bit unhappy to turn in quickly, but never a problem.

In short handling good/performance a bit gay.

Cheers

Mike,

Fair assesment.

Clutch is featherweight IMHO. Compared to a Scooby or TD. Gearbox is a bit notchy. re the Gears, you;ll be surprised how well 230BHP makes 5 gears feel right...When the Leon t-R was released alot did not like the 6 speed box, till they had alot more power in it...3rd is bloomin marvlous (chipped car of course ;) )

Re the low down pick up, depends on car, fuel and where you want it. Below 2k ( I forget stock spool in points) it is of course a normal 1.8 engine shifting a fairly heavy car...Trick of course is to keep the spooling going or at least ready :D

Turn in, now I'd say this is tyres alone. Although there is body roll and wallow if allowed to develop. I have noticed a big difference between TOYO's and P-ZEROS, massive, passengers have commented on difference between P-ZEROS and their CONTI's. Tyres can make or break a car, seems they left if broken this time.

Horses for courses, I think the mian things you picked up on are fixed with a remap, the others can be done as time permits. Turbo inlet pipe for example improves response, couple to a CAI and zaust, all things sing together. The turbo inlet is the single best thing after a chip IMHO.

Where abouts are you in the world?

Perhaps a few minutes behind a well booted and modded RS would allow you to see if the dark side is really for you :D

Performance gay, aye...I felt like that when the VAG comapny released the PD130's and PD150's made my Primera GT look slow, felt even worse once loaded, darn revvy engines.

Mike,

Basically, its a car you have to learn. When you've sussed out how to get the best from it you'll think it's a different car altogether.....then you'll get it re-mapped and think you bought another new car ;)

Gearbox is a bit notchy at first, but it eases up with miles and once again, you get used to it. I've not missed a change since shortly after i got the car.

Handling, well mine goes pretty much anywhere i point it, unless i'm being really silly which i don't do very often, honest Guv !!

1 BIG piece of advice though. Yes, the standard brakes are pretty good, but make sure you've warmed them up before pushing, specially after a re-map. A certain incident in another member's car taught me this lesson

As for the clutch, you've lost me entirely there, mine is damn near perfect (for me). Quite possibly the lightest clutch i've ever had on a car.

Mike, agree with whats been said so far. Would like to add that once chipped you will be suprised what you can give a run for the money. Even scoobs have been known to disappear in the rear view mirror, epecially on wet tracks where the AWD scoob struggles on corners.

6 speed?

have to agree with the guys on the clutch, i almost broke the pedal after getting out of the Renault, and i thought the type r clutch was about the same.

standard car spools the turbo at 2K rpm and yes if you let it drop under this it does seem like you waiting for it for the few seconds it take to get going, if you rev it fairly high and hit 3K or over after changing gear you'll be more than happy with the progress you'll make. it doesnt take long for a ton to appear, but i didnt tell you that ;)

Agree with everything that's been said already.

Gearbox doesn't like being particularly rushed but both it and engine get better with miles.

My RS had a lazy low down response and was one of the reasons I had a remap. Initially this didn't solve the problem but after my last visit to Jabba, Michael has seemed to have sorted it out.

Must say the problem was intermittent and never happened above 2k...the point at which the turbo kicks in.

So...once you've decide toget onto the slippery slope check out the Group Buy section.....always something going on and if there isn't......we can always sort that out. ;)
