Tuning Question

Featured Replies

I have a quick tuning question,

There are people out there who have Turbo'd Getz and I might get mine done,

Power increase is from 95BHP to around 160BHP at 0.6 Bar,

If It was a manual it would need a new clutch,

What do you do with an Automatic or are they less bothered with the extra stress?

You'd need to change cams, ecu, strengthen a lot of components internally, etc.

Basically don't bother!

And to answer your question, your torque convertor will be rated to a specific value, above which failure and slippage will occur despite there being no contact surfaces.

Basically don't bother!

Why? If he's willing to pay the price of it?

Manual box.

Apparantley the Get'z stock engine does not need to be mechanically changed at 0.6 bar (8psi),

It Does need a new manifold, Intercooler and the Hyundai standard ECU needs to be replaced or needs to be piggybacked,

So I need a larger torque converter? I see they come in like 7", 10" e.t.c

They're not cheap - a non standard with adaption to fit your car will be around £2k or more inc fitting  I know this because a friend of mine bought a new TC this week

That said a manual conversion won't be any cheaper and will obviously really impact insurance etc.

You will need to adjust the camshaft to open the valves longer to take advantage of the increased fuel\air mix going in, not doing so will make it an expensive way to make no extra power!

Be VERY wary of anyone who tells you a turbo will just 'bolt on' to a standard engine - this is NEVER the case, EVER. As someone who looked very carefully at turboing a 1.5 hyundai (they offered the same engine in 1.5T form too so it wasn't even a 'new' thing) a few years back I can categorically state that it's a much bigger job than you've been led to believe.

That said, if you're willing to try, it is possible and I'm sure the extra power and the sense of achievement will make it more than worthwhile!

good advice there i can confirm stevrs comments forged internals will b required and probably a new crank

the stock crank is allreay a forged one and would be fine..

it is possible to strip down a a torque converter and fit different valves etc to it to withstand a higher torque level, but i'd say dont bother!!!!!

the conrods will be the weakest link in any turbo'd engine which was originally n/a. also the compression ratio may be a little too high

As he said though, it runs at such low boost, internal's don't need to be changed.

look into an engine swap much more cost effective starlet gtti 1.3 turbo would probably be a good place to start loads of scope for more power if you got bored.

but if you wanted a fast car you should have started with one in the first place.

Nice Coat!

 Nice coat??

Skodayouth - race him in the wet in your standard Getz and you'll win - I've been in that Skyline and it's bloody awful in bad weather

why are you lot jumping on this man for wanting to turbo a hyundai getz after he has obviously looked into it yet you don't slate those on here that have fitted bigger turbo's to their octavia's and fabia's where they have had to do the same amount of work?

leave the man alone if he wants a turbo'd getz then let him do it, i think it would be a giggle :D
