My fan is clicking merrily

Featured Replies

Hullo

This morning the fan decided to start clicking as if something was caught in the blades - probably a clicking of arounf 400-500RPM, on speed 1. Putting the fan up speed 2 made the clicking increase in numbers, but lower in volume, and speeds 3 & 4 you don't hear anything but the blower blowing air.

So, the question is, is the fan area easy to access. It seems to be coming from under/behind the glovebox, and can be heard clearly from the engine bay too, even over the "knack knack knack" of a cold diesel engine.

If someone can point me in the direction of the fan (maybe from underneath?) I can have a little look and check nothing is wedged in there, or that the fan isn't loose and rubbing on the sides or something. I'm hoping there's just some debris or something in there.

Mate yes is probably like you say debris. I find if you put the fan on max and put the output to the dash vent, open all vents and wait for smoething to appear, usually in several pieces!

The Octavia fan is VERY easy to access. Remove the glovebox, remove the insulation and there it is. If no-one gives you a definite answer about the Fabia I'd recommend having a go.

I would be a little wary of using the fan in the meantime, especially on high as you don't know what's in there and it may damage the blades.

I ran it on speed 4 for only about a second to test the noise, but nothing more than that, and it was still clicking when I got to work and lowered the volume of the stereo to check... :D :speaker:

I'm still curious if I was able to peer into the inlet somehow - wonder where it is?

Furbys should be fitted with pollen filters so normally its something very small and insignificant, if its debris therefore you should beable to blast it out with a good blast of the fan.

Andy - just remembered - did you want that central air vent? - I'm galavanting around the Midlands and Oxford areas on Monday so could drop it off for you? ;)

And, yes I have pollen filter/s, so I'll just drive at lunchtime with the fan going ten to the dozen and try and clear it! :D If not, its time for that T20 torx wrench fitting to come out again!

Nah not up that way this weekend or Monday, can you hold onto it for me. Also do you have the mirror control knob with the top position being heated mirrors, then l+r, then l ( there is two types the wifes has the l+r at the top, then heated mirror then l)? Had to buy a new one yesterday as a pupil snapped the knob off! (

Where are you, Andy - I'm just trying to work out how far out my way you'd be if I came down to you - You're in Kent? - quite a way out of my way actually, wrong end of London for me. :(

I can always post them for a reasonable amount I reckon. I'll check out the button for the mirror on Saturday - pretty sure it's still there and available.

Jason,

The fan is on the UPSTREAM side of the pollen filter so you won't be able to clear it that way (I know I've tried!). Take the pollen filter out (behind the dash and accessed from the passenger footwell) and you should be able to reach up to the fan and get the crap out (it's a centrifugal jobbie rather than positive displacement so may feel different to what you're expecting as it's NOT like a radiator fan!)

Cheers

PS be prepared to get your hands shredded on the hatch for the pollen filter... tehre are some sharp plastic edges!
