Annoying Rattle!!!

Featured Replies

All,

Recently purchased a Skoda Superb 04 plate 1.9 TDi (Comfort Ed). Had it about a week when a rattle that I can only describe as sounding like a loose exhaust started when in 3rd, 4th or 5th gear at 1500 - 1800 RPM. Had it back to the garage whom sold it to me. When up on the ramps the exhaust is definately secure and not rattling as are the heat shields? No obvious loose parts under the car. Looked in engine bay and it all seems pretty well tied down. It is more like a resonance rattle if you know what I mean?

Back to the garage tomorrow for a mini service on the engine bay to try and diagnose the source. Just wondered if anyone else had encountered anything similar? Save time if we are looking in the completely wrong direction.

Any help appreciated

The air intake duct is a good place to look for engine speed related resonant rattles on the B5.5. Some use self-tappers; I prefer large cable ties around the duct in various places - you can experiment without drilling any holes.

I try and leave my annoying rattle at home when I go out but she keeps following me! Shouldn't have married her I suppose!

Well had it back to the garage today - No joy, everything retightened etc and the rattle is still there. Spoke with vadonald on this as he had a similar problem (Cheers for the help mate).

On a side note spoke with my local Skoda dealer and he is trying to convince me it is a CV joint! Anyone heard of this? Esp after only 40K?

Could also be a broken cat in the exhaust. So far have had 2 VW exhausts do it.

Odd thing is there is no noise with window down? - If it were an exhaust problem I would expect to hear it then. Car has just been through full service and MOT, would expect these to pick up exhaust problems/CV Joint issues.

Pretty Sure it is actually the black cover that is mounted right beside air intake pipe which I think is causing this part to rattle - It is pretty loose feeling no secure point down it's left hand side. It appears on closer inspection to be rubbing against the air intake.

oily- I have this problem too. Spoke to a mate of mine who works at a vw garage, problem same on passat, they change air intake box for a modified one

I also have this 'rattle'

But it sounds metallic, rather than the plastic on the air box.

BTW i have had the air box out when i changed bulbs (it rattled before and after) the air box is nice and tight so I'm pretty sure its that??

Forgot to say its also just gone thro' the MOT without a problem

I had a similar problem on my Superb 130 pdi turned out it was a broken flexy joint just after the turbo if you catch the exhaust behind the flexy joint and pull back and forth it could be broken and causing your problem check also the brake pads seems these can rattle also

ok thanks for the advice. :) Ray.

Try this

Open the bonnet and start the engine, rev it to 2500 rpm and listen carefully by the gearbox, what you are listening for is the sound of a stone in a washing machine drum, if you hear anything it's your dual mass flywheel doing it. hth.

Hi, I tried that but there was no such noise, The noise doesnt happen in neutral when revving only when driving, i looked around the airbox and the heatshield thats fixed onto the airbox was ripped and moving about a bit, i pulled that off and noticed the airbox rubbers were not in their mounts in the chassis, anyway i took it for a run without the heatshield on and the noise seems to have dampened but its more of a droan now instead of a rattle/vibration.. Also mentioned earlier the flexi joint on the d'pipe, mine is sooted up and moves freely, i cant see but it feels pretty loose is it meant to be like this, i know its leaking because of the sooty deposits, I recently replaced the flexi joint and cat on a b5 a4 tdi and it was a awkward job to say the least without ramps..... Getting somewhere i suppose. Will update.

That will be the snorkel then, that is the plastic angle changer that pushes onto the airbox, they are only any good for a couple of removals, then they deform and air is sucked in though where the seal should be, only remedy is to get a new one that will fit snug and create the seal once more.
