Re-map damage question

Featured Replies

Just wondering out of interest really, has anyone or do you know of anyone who has had a car re-mapped then had a major problem i.e. turbo blowing up or engine popping which was put down to the re-map

I believe there are a few in the Fabia forum, although I don't know if the remap was conclusively to blame.....

Chris

I think that any engine tuning (i.e, directly increasing power from the engine itself, as opposed to exhausts, intakes etc.) is going to place more stress upon the engine components. In the case of turbocharged engines, the turbo is included in this as well. Ultimately, if you drive gently most of the time and rarely boot it then the chances are that with moderate tuning you will be fine, but rag it around and I would personally be waiting for something to go pop.

Depends on the remap as well . . . I know of a few Fabias with blown turbos in which the prime suspect was the remap . . both cars I know of had the same map and it was a notably aggressive one too.;)

I have changed things like turbos on both standard and remapped cars. I guess your either lucky or you aint, but there are things you can do to limit the chances of things going wrong.

As above.. any form of tuning/ variance from standard spec could have a bad impact on certain parts..

Remaps are the most "suspect" because they stress the drivetrain and engine components more, not to say that a particular remap would be more prone to make a turbo fail ;) - It just takes one single component to be weak and that becomes the weakest link....... goodbye

85k (75k remapped) furby and still on original engine/turbo/clutch :D

I think a lot of it is down to driving style. If you drive aggresively anyway, you put strain on certain components, i.e. clutch and brakes. With a re-map your aggresive driving puts extra strain on already overstressed parts.

Makes sense to me.

First remap i had damaged the turbo, but the boot regulator thingy was knackered. I done blame the map as its something i understood when i went down the mod road.

I thing i would say is that if you have a weak link, re-mapping will potentialy place greater strain on that weak link.....

What do you mean exactly would you care to enlighten me so more :)

I guess it's down to luck and how much you abuse your car, something that makes me wonder though is whats the difference between normal driving and aggressive driving i lkie to make good progress but i aint smoking it up off every set of traffic lights and round every roundabout

If your worried about the effects of remapping, then dont get it done, thats the simple answer, but, if you do go to a tuner, then "TELL" them to do the map that "YOU" want and not one that rings every last ounce out of the engine/turbo etc.

There is no need to map to the limit, just get a balanced map that your happy with that suits your style of driving, and if there is anything you want adjusted after its done, then take it back, as most tuners will gladly alter the map for you, as its not in their interest to have engines and components failing after they have worked their magic on the engine.

I don't not hide my praise for Mike at Impossible Performance and his maps, as he has always mapped as the customer wants, and always offers the correct advice, its just up to you if you want to accept it.

Jabba, Forge, Awesome etc, all offer similar facilities, its just up to you to ask.

The way you drive a car will have biggest impact on component life, than the simple act of remapping alone. i reckon I could break my car inside a 10 miles if I really chose to.... but I drive it how it wants to be driven, and not abusing it in any serious manner. :)

Agreed, just because a car is remapped shouldn't mean you automatically wear out components quicker.

I've never understood why people fit a switch to their maps when they could just control the power with their right foot...

Could someone define abusing a car just for me to clarify the fact's and to see if your version of abuse is different to mine

i know that may sound a bit stupid but i'm just trying to figure out the issue's that could arise from vary degree's of car use and abuse

I'm guessing continually driving above 3k when cold, hitting the limiter, etc.

Anything else should be well within engine tolerances surely?
