Epic Oil Leak Saga

Featured Replies

My poor broken baby ... :(

Our Octavia 1.9TDi seems to have an unfathomable oil leak. Last summer, we noted some oil spots on the drive and it was taken into Sherlodge Garage where a rocker cover gasket was replaced.

Just before Christmas, we noticed the problem again - and it went back in where the head gasket was replaced.

Early in February, it went in for a service and they noted that it was still leaking oil - and it was taken in a again two weeks ago to Sherlodge. And there it has been ever since (sob).

Apparently they have "stripped it down" but not been able to find the leak. After consulting Skoda UK they replaced the engine head, but it is still leaking. They are now consulting Skoda with a view to a complete new engine - citing a possible hairline crack in the engine manufacture.

It has just slipped out of its three year warranty, but we are assured it will be righted for nothing anyway as it is a long standing problem. But all very, very dissapointing I'd say.

Plus - we paid for a full oil change a month ago which was wasted. What do people think our chances are of getting a refund on part of the service costs and a warrranty extension from Skoda?

Can't wait to have my baby back - I think it's due some TLC in the form of a onving wash and wax ...

Sump seal or did i miss you saying that had been done?

Either way good luck and I'd want it in writing that you will be covered for this to be fixed :)

Best of luck

If it is fixed under warranty , then any parts replaced are covered for at least a year , thats how i read the situeation same as if you purchased the parts new yourself .

Yep, any new engine would be warrantied for sure.

I'd be pleased if I was getting a brand new engine in my 3 year old car for free. :)

Had a problem with my brand new Octy RS leaking considerable quality of oil. Diagnosed by Preston Motors as a faulty allen nut/key in the oil sump/rail and successfully fixed by them.

If you ask them nicely they might transfer the old oil and filter (that you paid for) over to your new engine free of charge. But then again if they are any good they will use a new filter and oil which will be paid for by the warranty as it is incidental with the type of work been done.

They are only covered up until the warranty expires. If someone said that to me, the first thing I would ask for is a copy of your parts invoice showing proof of your purchase.

That's really good advice Fordfan - thanks. Skoda UK wanted the garage to take photos of the oil leak so they could send to the factory - still awaiting a "verdict".

Well, after several weeks of irritating delays (and endless chasing on our part) we have now collected our car complete with its new engine. Sherlodge Garage said that there was no paperwork and no warranty on this part / work as the manufacturers warranty had now expired. To be absolutely sure we were completely irked off by the tgime we drove away we again heard the immortal line "Skoda UK have replaced the engine as a goodwill gesture".

I have decided to write to Skoda Uk and say a few words about this car - by far the worst of my four Skodas yet in terms of issues. What a shame.

Sorry you are irked off  You had a 3 year old car that leaked a bit of oil, the dealer tried to fix the leak (whilst the car was in warrenty) the fix was short lived and now that the car is out of warrenty Skoda have fitted a brand new engine gratis? Why are you irked off? If the garage had done another temorary fix and then declared the car out of warrenty when it started leaking again you would have reason to be peeved but it sounds like both the dealer and SKUK have bent over backwards to help you. I think 99% of other manufacturers would have been saying pay 1/2 or whatever.

As for you having paid for an oil change......... Give me strength :(

Thanks for comments PostmanPat - it's good to have an alternative perspective.

I guess the maximum irking-off occurred because the car was taken in for the oil leak (fourth attempt to fix) one week before the warranty expired but was not diagnosed with needing a new engine until two weeks later. This then led to the whole "it's out of warrnty" thing occurring, which I had to deal with by explaining the on-going nature of the problem. Our car had clearly had a faulty engine which - I suggest - has been faulty for some time. No problem with that at all, but I wouldn't characterise fixing it as a goodwill gesture.

Good to hear someone sticking up for Skoda UK and the dealers. I've done it myself several times before and I'm sure I'll live to do it again ...

Ah the mists clear and yes I would have been irked myself, but I am sure on reflection you have to be pleased to get a new engine FOC, at the time tho I can see your point due to the aggro, worry, and chasing about you must have been through:( at the result tho you must agree :D
