i realise that im unlikely to find an unbiased opinion on this but am nontheless interested to hear what you guys think.

Basically its a light hearted conversation between me and a friend with a bit of the car equivilant of a nepolians complex. I have an octy mk1 vrs with 155bhp/tonne, he has a 106 rallye with some alterations to his at 131bhp/tonne.... can you see where this is going???;) ;)

which do you think would come off best on one of the long undulating roads that have made the North York moors famous for driving?

i reckon that there'd be nowt in it personally what with power on my side and handling on his...or do "ya'all reckon id get my *** handed to me" as he so elequently put it,lol.

also as a general theme what do you reckon is better on this kind of road, traditional small hot hatches of old or scoobs an evo's and assorted larger cars?

fairly even, but the Rallye would have the slight upper hand

If you can take advantage of top-end power, I suspect the Octy will be ahead, but if the roads are more challenging and agility and acceleration count, it will likely be very close or with him having a slight advantage. Scooby's and Evo's are great up to 100mph and get there very quickly imhe, but above that you'll find similar powered non-4wd cars will start to pull away from them thanks to not having the same transmission losses.

The driver will also plays a huge part in any outcome ;)

Chris

In the straights the Octy has it more than beaten, but in the twistys the 106 would catch up imho.

I reckon a Fabia 2.0 would kick both together

naa mate, on the way to the pub to discuss this it understeered and flipped off the road into a sheep!

lmao! post moved to the skoda support area for octavias!! someone obviously thinks ive got no chance!

Those 106 Rallye's are not to be under estimated especially the 1.3 S1's

seems the general consensus is it'd be even stevens on a run out, best pack my biggest cajones if it ever happens, lol!

I don't know the N Yorks moors. Your Octy would have the 106 on the A87 (long straights, fast sweepers, well over a ton easily possible if very illegal), but if we bar you from exceeding the 106's Vmax on occasional straights, a twisty would be too close to call.

if its bumpy corners with long straights then the octavia will beat him easy as your car will be more tractable but if its smooth sweeping corners and he knows his car he will beat you :)

this is an Octavia vRS...:D

speaking from experience...en route to see mavis...:P

slight difference there was i had never ever been down that road and mark knew it very very well as he used to live there. he was cheating

In my humble experience of the Octy vRS, it's the bumpy roads which really unsettle the car ... the Octy feels much more at home on smooth, open A roads and motorways than fast twisty A and B roads.....

Chris

I'd recon that with a standard Octy the Pug would win as Chris says, bumpy roads unsettle the Octy in standard trim to the ectent that any sensible driver would back off.

A freind had a decat&exhaust 106 xsi wich is pretty much the same as the rally but with the electric bits put back in

it was pretty much even with my modded focus

cornering and acceleration with the focus was pretty much even

the 106 would run out of legs quite abruptly at 110 ish

so a standard octy should kill it on acceleraton and deffinatly top end

flat sweeping bends i would have thought the octy would be fairly even stil

its the rough and tight stuff it will lose out on big time as thats were the 106 was the most fun

the 106 felt mad in the corners but you couldnt tell when you were near the limit and it would step the back out without notice

just an update for those interested, stripped out 106 with roll cage and stiffer suspension and stage 1 mods got eaten over the moors by the chipped octy, on both straight lines and corners.106 round corners had back end skipping about (couldnt of gone faster)while octy wasnt even understeering.

I'm pleased but surprised, cos there are a few places on moorland roads where I have to back off from my usual "I drive at 60 mph, and anyone who wishes to overtake me is perfectly at liberty to do", due to severe body heave.

Was just gonna say, the std (Mk1?) Octy handling was more boat-like during fast cornering IMHO, I was not driving the vRS though but a lower spec so probably not really a good comparison, but still.

Heave issues are actually mostly on straights (but maybe I don't meet the "wrong sort of bump" [road drops away and comes back up, rather than sharp crest, where even the Elegance feels pretty planted] mid-corner)?

its the first time ive had chance to really open it up and must say i was surprised myself, 90% of the corners were 40mph and 70mph on the straights inbetween, we/i didnt hammer it inbetween as we were only out for a spirited drive and had nothing to gain. 3rd gear rocks for this type of road.(good surface with lots of dips and twists) one thing i did notice is that on hairpins (1st gear stuff) the 106 pulled out a gap of 50 or so yards but it was soon reeled in...stupid inside wheelspin, lol.

i think the story could be different with a "stig" behind the wheel of each but to all intents and purposes the octy did very well.
