Gearbox oil change?

Featured Replies

prehaps you guys can help solve a problem im having with selecting a gearbox oil for my SEAT Toledo, please read this thread:

gearbox oil - SEAT Cupra.net - SEAT Forum

as you can see it seems your not supposed to change from a mineral to a fully synthetic. any ideas?

ISTR that that is yesterday's news, and no longer applies due to changes in the composition of oil seals. For best advice on oils, run a search for posts by user id "oilman".

Mines never been changed at 93k.... might get round to it when I have the time, now you lot have mentioned it.

I'll be using a Castrol product, mainly due to brand loyalty!

What volume of fluid will I need to refil the box? 2litres ish?

I have just got 2 litres of Castrol TAF X 75w90. Just waiting for some decent weather and some time off and I will give it a go.

Can anyone help me with the correct torque for the drain and fill plugs?

No idea what is in mine, must agree with farcrygamer though mine tends to be a bit tough to drive when cold, as soon as I hit temp it's lovely and smooth though.

Bit of Advice, check you can open the filler before you get the drain plug out. Mine was done by a mates garage & they spent an age getting the filler out after they had taken the drain out, a few worried looks thrown in !! I dont think I would have managed it.

Yeah was advised to do that so have got some Plusgas dismantling fluid just in case

I had mine changed at the 90k service by JBS, it went in feeling quite floaty/vague and came out slightly crunchy (1st to 2nd) when cold but very smooth a precise once running for a couple of mins.

Not sure what they used but I'm sure it's on my receipt.

Alot of Vag gearboxes take 10w40 engine oil is whats recommended it the books for some of them:) Most will take 80w 90

10w40 works very well especially in the 02k gearboxes.

80w90 I would say is too thick.

I have a stock of the correct gear oil for the five speed gearboxes should anyone need any.

I heard that in the older polo boxes and that:)
