BP Ultimate (Diesel)

Featured Replies

Getting 42.5 mpg avg for that last 2000 miles on ultimate, previous 2000 was 40 mpg on shell.

I presume that will be Shell's regular/premium diesel.

When they provide it nationally, I suggest you try Shell VPower Diesel - better effect than BP Ultimate IMHO.

There is a lot of "Oh Brand X much better than Brand Y" when it comes to road fuels but precious little independent verification............if any. If you're happy then stick with it. My Fabia vRS has spent most of it's life on Esso diesel. No problems, goes brilliantly, great mpg and no smoke unless it's been trundling around town for a couple of days. A good blast clears it. Tried BP and Shell stuff but have no personal evidence that they improve anything other than their profits.

An interesting point to bear in mind is just whose fuel your buying anyway. The oil majors have extensive "exchange" deals across the UK to cover areas where they don't have access to refinery capacity. What you believe is BP-refined fuel may not be but it will conform to their specs. Likewise with all the rest. It's a fascinating topic.

Quite correct; when you consider the regular 95 octane unleaded and regular/premium diesels -

BUT when considering BP Ultimate, Shell VPower and (I believe) Tesco 99 Super Unleaded; these are EXCLUSIVE to their producer.

according to a mate who used to be a tanker driver all diesel (and petrol) goes into the tankers EXACTLY the same i.e. there is only 1 grade.

It is however then, once its in the tanker the additives are added to make it into Ultimate / 99 RON etc.

i havnt really noticed much difference with bp ultimate diesel compared to normal diesel

That would explain why I found a variation between garages.

I also wonder whether its effect varies from one engine to another, especially for mpg. Burnsey & I both noticed a (small) positive impact on mpg and we both have the V6. The mpg profile of the V6 is very different to the other engines being OK for long distances out of town but very thirsty in town or going up hills, where the other engines are a bit more even in their profile.

FYI, for any North-West based people, I've found a Motor Factors in Northwich, Cheshire who are selling the std 500ml bottles for

What you must remember folks is that super dooper fuels have additives, so when you buy a gallon of fuel, you don't get a gallon of fuel, you get a gallon less the additive, personally my experience of these fuels is a poor one, I used super unleaded in a V6 I used to own, only difference I noticed was the extra dosh at the pump, the Millers however I'd say is a good idea, plus they are a well respected brand in the oil field.

I'm now running with Millers Diesel Power Sport 4 and TBH i haven't noticed any difference

However in SHMBO's Fiesta, it has quietened it down no end!

Great news, now you can try it on the fiesta also! :D

back in the day i had a 50cc motor bike and when the bp ultimate came out i tried it. I could not beleive how good it was. that was petrol tho

Slightly off topic as the Shell garage near me has got some VPOWER diesel on one of its pumps. It nut shell :thumbdwn: .

Noticed the difference immediately once it started to flush through into the engine.

I shall be returning to plain Shell and Millers Power Sport 4 tonight when I got an fill up.

Gave it a try, but wont do it again.

A bit cryptic there; will you explain a bit please? What was wrong with it?

The car became sluggish. Its pickup when compared to standard Shell Diesel + Millers Power 4 was quite noticeable fairly quickly once it started to flush through from the tank.

I've now returned back to as I was before and the car feels better.

Just thought I ought to qualify my posts in this thread; in that my comments viz. BP Ultimate have been based on earlier use of BP Ultimate Petrol and Diesel in previous cars (Fabia 1.4mpi, FIAT Doblo 1.9JTD, Omega 2.5td) and not in my current Octaiva vRS TDI.

I have been using Shell Diesel Plus & V-power diesel in my Octy (with and without Millers Sport 4 in the V-power) and overall, I'm not convinced there is any difference, and I'm sure that some fuels suit some cars and not others (my Fabia loved Shell Optimax/V-power but loathed BP Ultimate).

I need to fuel up tonight and want to try something different. Do I use Shell diesel plus (perhaps with Millers Sport 4) or go for BP Ultimate Diesel?

I have decided I will give the BP Ultimate a go and see what happens.

all-though not a superb, i was in Germany for a year with a 2.0pd Octy and ran it on shell v power diesel for a year and found it to be much better for both power and mpg, it was quite a bit smother in cold weather as well (didn't tick over like a tractor!) i'll be putting it in my roomster when i can get it localy.

I have noticed my Superb 1.9 runs like a tractor on normal fuel - particuarly if I do lots of short runs. Giving it a bit of a thrash cleans it out and makes it a bit smoother. I had been running on cheapo diesel for a tank and it was horrible. I stuck a full tank of BP Ultimate in again and it was transformed. last night my Millers sport arrived and I stuck some in as well. It is fantastic - so quiet and smooth. The car has been transformed and goes like stink! I suggest others try Millers and BP Ultimate.

i havnt really noticed nothing different just the cost lol

I've tried millers too.

I fully concor with your view.

Waste of money.

I could not get the Powersport 4 but the older stuff. I have now used a full bottle and must say even that stuff made it run smooth and quieter. I was very impressed with it  even though I just used the bog standard diesel.

I have now filled up with BP ultimate diesel and Powersport 4 to give it a try, will post on findings.

Since my last post, 30th July, I have now run two tank-fulls (50 litres and 450 miles) of BP Ultimate, followed by two of Shell V-Power, followed by two of Shell regular.

I don't think I can tell any difference (performance/mpg/noise) between the Ultimate and V-Power but the Shell regular seems slightly less smooth and the engine sounds a degree more 'diesely'.

I have therefore decided to run on Shell V-power as it is 1 - 2p per litre cheaper than the BP Ultimate (at the fuel stations I use) and I get 'double' shell plus points vs. Nectar points with BP.

I might now see if there is any difference with/without Millers Powersport 4.
