BP Ultimate (Diesel)

Featured Replies

I was too lazy to queue at the local supermarket so I went into a BP and decided to splash out on BP Ultimate.

They reckon you're supposed to get 28 more miles out of a tank of the stuff compared to normal diesel as well as better performance etc.

If anything, on this first tank, my mpg has gone down. This is a journey I do a lot, and I can usually accurately estimate the mpg depending on my driving style. I really took my time this morning on the drive to work, and would have expected anything from 47 to 50mpg on normal diesel. On BP Ultimate, I struggled to top 44.

Does this stuff take a few tankfuls to have any effect?

The car does feel quicker, though the timing has coincided with very cold weather, so the car will be quicker anyway because of the colder air going into the turbo.

Anyone else any experiences with these "Premium" fuels? Are they worth the extra £2.50 for a tankful in the long run?

I have tried the diesel can't say I have noticed any loss in consumption but did notice a marked difference in performance I do use a tank every now and then to clean the engine out , don't know if it actually does any good.

Always use BP Ultimate in my cars since 2004, hate putting anything else in !, on the occasions that i have been caught "short" and have had to put normal diesel in the car seems to be sluggish and very noisey. You do need to fill up a few times to feel the benefit.

Got short this week and had to fill up with Esso diesel, car hated it plus I had clouds of black smoke which you dont get with Ultimate. I do about 40000 miles a year so having the car running smoothly is a good thing, whether its worth it with a A to B car is up to the individual.

If it reduces the clouds of black smoke then it is definately worth the extra

That's the thing about diesels I hate the most - even when I accelerate away slightly quicker than normal, there will be a small puff of smoke. That's on Morrison's fine diesel :D

I'll persevere(sp) for several tanks of Ulitmate to see how I get on.

If your car is out of warrenty you could do worse than trying millers power 4 in normal derv.

iv had my VRS for a few weeks and have always used bp ultimate as its smoother and better for your engine, plus feels abit quicker. this week iv tried the shell v-power diesel and its rubbish as its a new formula using some kind of gas which my vrs hates. it feels like it skips a beat plus so loud. performance feels like its dropped aswell. USE BP ULTIMATE ALWAYS

I use Millers and run only BP Ultimate. Car goes "very nicely thankyou", no smoke or anything, very smooth and still good economy. It has just had it's second MOT, and the emissions test produced no soot/smoke/exhaust signs at all.

Has anyone ever seen any tests that prove that BP Ultimate actually produces better results in an emission test?

Dubious.

How much proof do I need other than seeing my car do the emissions test and no smoke or anything visible?

The tester said it was very clean.

I have used it a few times. No better fuel comsumption but runs so much smoother and quieter. I find my 55 1.9 runs better after a long motorway run - say 50 miles. I had a month of short trips on normal fuel and it was starting to sound like a tank. After letting the tank run almost dry, I filled up on BP Ultimate and after 10 miles it was much smoother. After a lond fast run it is as good as new. I wont ever use anything else now. Trust me, give it a go!

I agree. Less smoke and smoother. Jury still out on performance and mpg. I'm going to try some Millers with it

Since I've filled it up I haven't see any smoke out of the back at all. I'm used to leaving the car behind in a plume of black smoke, so it's nice to have no tell tale sign of a diesel.

Probably why the mpg isn't so good as I keep booting it to see if there's any smoke :D :D

I think the point is that you don't know if it'd be the same on normal diesel or not.

Seeing as the car was on normal diesel before I finally took the plunge for Ultimate I know exactly what the exhaust output was like before and after the change.

Don't believe me if you want, it doesn't bother me. I shall carry on using Ultimate regardless of your doubting.

Definitely quieter and way smoother. MPG seems same with 4000 on the clock. Will stick with BP

I vote this for "Most Defensive Post Ever".

I am neither doubting nor having a go. I was merely trying to clarify.

Personally I got awful MOT results using BP ultimate for a few tanks and during the MOT. It had a new filter and was warm too so I would have expected much better.

I would say IMHO millers has more effect and bearing in mind I have seen old derv cars running of Wych Farm Crude I wouldn't say any modern fuel is particularly smoky

I was following a 1.8t vrs today and then later a 2.0TFSI and both put out a small amount of smoke when the turbo kicked in.

They always see my smoke. I cant see theirs!;):D

My superb does puff out a bit of smoke on acceleration and I was intrigued by this thread and decided yesterday to treat the car to some BP Ultimate.

I know roughly the MPG my car gives and am interested to see if there are any changes also with performance!

I have seen a few threads re this stuff and am hooked on it. My car certainly runs quiter with this stuff in it, but is a bit rare to find in the south West. My brother has a '53' plated vRS and he also has tried same and agrees re smoother running, that is a vRS getting on for 30K miles with previous diet of supermarket fuel.

It costs me about

Went to fill mine up on the way home and they've increased the price from 99.9p to 103.9p

That's an 18p per gallon increase

Normal unleaded has gone up 1p at this petrol station - suspect profiteering, as I'm not aware of any oil crisis anywhere. Looks like I'll have to look elsewhere for my BP Ultimate.....

How much are you lot paying for it?

No increase in mpg whatsoever after 3 tanks full........ Does seem to run better though and far less soot out the back.

In the Hull area we pay 97.9p per gallon about 4p dearer than standard which I thought was quite reasonable, just waiting for results now

  • 1 month later...

After reading this thread, I thought I'd try it in my V6.

First tank (99.9p) was definitely smoother & mpg also seemed quite a bit better.

Second tank (102.9p) was noticeably rougher & the mpg improvement seemed to be gone.

Third tank (99.9p) was again quieter and smoother & mpg seemed better again though possibly not as good as first tank.

Nearly ran out of fuel last time (0 miles left in the tank) & had to refuel with Tesco (93.9p). Much noisier and rougher & poorer mpg too.

Three different garages & it makes me wonder if there was something wrong with my second tank. Quite a revelation to go back to the non-ultimate diesel.

Higher price seems worth it to me, though it is quite a bit higher when compared to supermarket prices.

I usually run shell, although am now back onto shell derv extra now it has been put back on the pumps at the local stations.

I can honestly say that a couple of tanks of ultimate has not had a positive effect on fuel consumption. This has been a good few weeks worth of the same route at the about same speed on a motorway. (Yes that is using the full to full method and i have figures for about 10k miles to compare against.)

Bearing in mind the shell is between 93 and 95p and the ultimate is between

Didn't notice any difference when I put a few tank fulls of Ultimate through. Millers Power Sport 4 on the other hand
