Octavia TDI Elegance Estate '51 - uneven front tyre wear

Featured Replies

Can anyone help?

I am currently running Avon ZZ-3 205/55 ZR16 tyres all round on standard 16 inch wheels which were fitted with 52,133 miles on the clock when I bought the car from Jewsons in Oxford. I have now done 73,905 miles.

However, I noticed very early on that there was uneven wear on the front tyres which are now due for replacement.

The front nearside is wearing excessively on the inside and the front offside tyre is wearing excessively on the outside. I have had the alignment checked by Chemix who operate a four wheel laser system and were recommended by Skoda. The alignment is ever so slightly out but not enough to cause any serious problem and certainly does not affect the handling. It does not suffer from the camber drift to the left, unlike my first Octavia, which was never fully resolved.

What is the problem? I do not believe this is a symptom of worn wheel bearings and there is none of the 'hum' associated with that problem.

When I bought test drove the car, I noticed the usual drift to the left and asked them to correct it, which they did.

Is it possible that the adjustment is the cause of the excessive uneven wear?

Any help on this would be much appreciated as I would like to get to the bottom of this before I spend money on new tyres.

Thanks in Advance.

Martin

PS Any recommendations on new tyres? The Avons are good but a bit pricey.

If you'd not had a recent 4-wheel alignment, I'd suspect that the "cure" for the pulling left had been to change the toe settings and make the front wheels pull right!

As for the tyres, I think you'll find a lot of people recommending Toyo Proxes T1-R, which should come in about £72 each, including fitting, balancing, new valve and disposal of old tyre.

Falken 452, but then I always say that :P

A bit like me and Toyos.
