With most modern VAG cars I think you probably need to remove the front bumper first. I have the Haynes manual if you would like to have look...

I was pretty sure it was a bumper off job too, especially for cars fitted with factory Xenons. Daft state of affairs really, but there you go....

We use two ways, both without bumper off

ExAudiSi is lending me his Haynes manual, so I expect the whole front end will be completely off with me stood next to it, scratching my head!

I managed to move mine enough, by unbolting it and slackening off the slam panel at one end,

At the time I suspected the only way to 100% remove was to remove the bumper.

this is what i did. there's 1 fixing thats slightly hidden by bumper but reachable with spanner. just slacken things off slightly but remember what you've loosened as it'll just cause rattles as i found.

Snap... loosened one of the nuts holding the bumper inplace, centre one I believe. I was able to move the bumper about 1 1/2 inches forward which was just enough to allow me to undo the rest of the screws and lever the headlight out plenty of scraped knuckles

once out it allowed plenty of space to make a neat install of the HID kit:D

Might give this method a go then.

Although, I've got my hands on the Haynes manual now. Some of the instructions are bit vague TBH!

When I done this I hadn't realised the expected way was to remove the bumper altogether!

I have just taken a look at the bumper to refresh me memory on this.

Describing the drivers side headlight....

On the right hand side you will see one of the retaining nuts for the light but when you try to undo it comes up against the bumper.....

directly below this nut is a star/spline screw (inline with the left hand side of the radiator, looks like and can slide forward) that can be slackened and the bumper can be levered forward by about a half inch or so (tighten it back up in its new position until you have finished), this is just enough to allow you take out the aforementioned retaining nut..... can be a little awkward getting the retaining nut back in but not too hard!

I would imagine the nearside light should be the same

ignore me, boring job/lunchtime....just remembered picture of car 'modified' with roof chop, bonnet job and both lights taken out at same time....no tools needed.......think it was done by Mr F Allen Tree

Hopefully, this modification won't be happening to mine!

Right then, I managed to get both headlights out without removing the bumper entirely.

Had to remove the two front retaining bolts & managed to get enough leverage to get the headlights out with a bit of force!

They went back in better than they came out!

While they were out, I was amazed at the amount of rust building up on the battery retaining bolt & bracket! :eek: The car is only 2.5 years old.

So I coated them with a bit of molybdeum grease.
