Noise when turning on the ignition

Featured Replies

Hi, i have had my Fabia vRS for a couple of weeks now im im loving it :D

I was sitting in the car today with the radio off, and when i put the key in the ignition and turned the ignition on only, i noticed a noise coming from underneath or the back of the car.

I didnt notice it before, so dont really know if its been like that from the start, but every time i turn the ignition on i can hear it or maybe because i know its there now and listen out for it.

Its quite hard to tell where exactly it is coming from as i can only hear it for a few seconds.

The noise is like fluid travelling or being pumped through a pipe or something?

Or more of a squirting noise. lol not very helpful.

Is this meant to happen?

Yes. Have a search, there's loads said about it.

Could it be this ?

More than likely HTH :D

Yep spot on.

So its not a fault then :o

Thought it might be the fuel, didnt really know what to put in the search box

Cheers for the quick replies.

Aha - thanks for link as I've been wondering. I posted this question a few weeks ago but noone knew what I was talking about (probably my poor description  ).

It is the fuel system being pressured up when the ignition is switched on.

No...it's the suspension being pumped up to normal ride height..all BXs do it...:)

Not if it only lasts a few seconds - they could take a lot longer than that to pump up. David, you are shewing your seniority if you remember BX's pumping up.

I'd love to see a BX do it before the engine was started. Without the LHM pump running the car wont do a lot other than sink. I had a Xantia that sank and made funny groaning noises as soon as the engine was started. Wierd.

I too wondered about the wierd squelching noise as I'd never heard any other car doing it, only humming instead as the fuel pump primes. Was glad to hear it's normal. :D

My old car used to hum while the fuel pump primed. Would there have been any ill effects if you started the engine before the humming stopped?

Just wonderered!

i think i'm senior to mr G, at least in age, if not in knowledge or grumpiness.......

BXs...nice, but a hell of a job to get a Dino steak into...remember the flintstones at the drive in??

anyone remember the fuel pump clunk, klunk when turning on a mini?

nostalgia, eh!!....why did they ever do away with starting handles, trafficators, vaccuum powered wipers etc etc...

gotta go, tears in eyes.....:finger:

oh and opening quartelights..air without windrush...

Me grumpy? You are thinking of someone else.

My Dad had a Standard 8 with a starting handle and trafficators. I remember the starting handle never seemed to work as well as bump starting. The thing I remember about the Standard was that it had no carpets. Rubber mats were the norm. He swapped the Standard for an A35 van and then a Mini van. Talk about primitive. I remember the Mini had a heater as an optional extra and the battery was on a shelf behind the drivers seat. As a treat we kids could sit on the battery immediately behind the driver. Nothing wimpy like seat belts or head restraints. Lots of leg room in the back of a Mini van,
