VRS broken down AGAIN

Featured Replies

hey just got my octavia vrs back from the garage after the water pump went, so it got new water pump & timing belt. 2 days later my 'TESTING ENGINE ELECTRONICS' light came on. Its the orange one that looks like a engine. Its staying on , anyone got any ideas as to what it could be this time. mind on its just done 30k.

Feel for you mate. Never had any real issues with my MKI and that had clocked

up over 40K. Never used any oil or coolant between services.

only had it 4 weeks and its already spent a week of that in the garage !

have you had the cam belt done, is it 4 years old ?

excuse my noobishness if this is the same as the timing belt.

mine is on 50K and has Never used any oil or coolant between services as vRSLen.

sorry to hear of your problems.

as many people will say, first get it plugged into a vagcom, see what faults it throws up.

Hope I have as much luck with my MKII vRS. Looks like oil consumtion may be

an issue for me  After running the MKI and reading the reports on the

MKII I do wonder if I have done the right thing.

To be honest it was go the big turbo route with the MKI or get the MKII.

I thought the MKII was a better ride and better equiped but hey...

I feel for you mate...I had a nice looking 1.8T Elegance and one thing after the other went wrong in the end got rid...bought it from 'The Car People' they gave me a refund but nowhere near how much I spent on it (new tyres, service etc.). It only had about 25,000 miles. I hope you get it sorted...

Back to the garage it is.

PS IS that your sig? Looks a tad big!!!

i ken its big lol , oops. Cam belt=timing belt. Its just had it done with new water pump at 30k. cars only done like 50 miles since i got it back not happy. goin back to the garage the morn with it

The cam belt could be on a tooth out causing a correlation error between the crank and camshaft sensors.

The light I believe stays on until its cleared by the dealer even if its an intermittent fault. I would take it to someone with vag com, ideally the garage who did the work for you & get the fault code read, it could be something really silly.

You can clear the light yourself by disconecting the battery for about 15 mins, if the fault re occurs it will come on again but this I always class as a last resort. Its better to find out whats wrong as sods law says it will do it again somewhere at 2 in the morning when its pouring with rain etc

I've had a load of problems on my 1.8t VRS. Its getting to the point now where if something else goes wrong I'm getting rid.

Nothing really major, I just get the fealing its not been put together very well.

Mad rumble/grinding when turning left (the garage has no idea what it is)

New driveshaft/cv (left)

New tracking rods

Leaking power steering

Front wipers fubar

Rear wiper fubar

I've only had it six months! Approved used cars my ****!

i had a similiar issue after a cambelt change .. wasnt the cambelt change, turned out to be my MAF sensor.

it happended about 1 min after filling up with petrol if that makes and difference. Well i bought it from a Ford garage who did all the work on it. I went past them today and they say they will stick it to a VW garage to get it on the computer. good thing i live in orkney where all the main dealer garages are less than about 2 miles away lol. So u think the timing belt may had been fitted incorectly ?

Should i be driving it around as normal till the garage looks at it? or should not drive it until it goes to the garage

that sounds favourite to me

is it ok to still drive ??? or not take it out till its goin to the garage ?

If you dont know whats causing it no one can tell you what to do, its really your call, it could possibly be something incredibly simple but it might not be.

Personaly I would get it checked ASAP & unless absolutely neccesary not drive it

Ok they stuck it on the computer and couldnt find anything, they think that when they stuck the timing belt on they knocked a sensor?????? They checked it over and said if it comes on again to bring it right back

Good news in a way, hope it doesnt return.

they lied to you, if the engine light came on then there was a fault code atleaset even if they couldn't find a cuase for it there still would have been a fault code logged.

ye ur right, think its cos something thery have done to it, and they just dont want to pay. OH AND ABOUT 2 HOURS AFTER GETTING IT BACK FROM THEM THE LIGHT HAS CAME ON AGAIN , AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. There also seems to be a lot more than normal of white smoke comin from the exhaust? think the senser could be to do with emitions or a head gasket, and they just dont want to tell me cos they hav to pay for it ?

Did you ever get the cambelt checked to see if it was a tooth out? as i have heard that can throw up alot of errors. worth checking if just to rule it out.

White smoke can also happen after its been idling for a while due to water build up.

  • Author

no they didnt check it for that, wouldnt that hav showed up on the computer thou? Its really starting to anoy me, goin BACK to the garage in a bit to see what the hells goin on with it

With the light on there will be a fault code logged, get this code and maybe we'll be able to tell them what is wrong with it.

We first came across this correlation error after we had fitted a belt, the car came back the next day with the light on (everyone makes mistakes). It threw up this fault, checked the sensors and they were fine, cleared the fault and went for a drive, the light came on after a mile, cleared the fault and checked every 1/4 mile the fault was logged and the light was not on. Got back and thought about it and came to the conclusion that the timing was out due to the belt fitment. Checked it very carefully and it was a tooth out, during all this the car drove normally.
