I haven't posted here for ages, I've been busy what with having moved jobs in January, however the result of that is that my beloved TT is gone, and has been replaced by a Ford Mondeo, although on the plus side it's the ST TDCi ;)

I needed a bigger car for my new job. Also, my new employers car allowance differs from the old one in that rather than having a fuel card, I'm reimbursed on a mileage rate, so 27 mpg in the TT wasn't a sound economic option ! Plus I'd doing 20,000 miles a year so depreciation is a killer. I decided a diesel was in order, test drove a Golf 2.0 GT TDi, some A4 TDi quattros and then the new Skoda Octavia diesel vRS. I wasn't very impressed with the Golf, the A4s were too pricey, as was the Skoda, believe it or not.

So I looked at the Mondeo ST TDCi. The depreciation on these things is staggering, so I picked one up on a 55 plate, with loads of extras, for about ten grand less than the price when new.

So the verdict - well, the extra bodykit looks cool (I reckon), with 18" rims, flared wheel arches, honeycomb grill, discrete spoiler, side skirts and deeper bumpers.

Internal equipment is excellent, with an MP3 compatible in-dash Sony CD stacker, cruise, climate, auto lights and wipers, heated seats, bluetooth, voice commands, and stereo remote controls next to the steering wheel. Plenty of leather inside too.

Other equipment includes ESP, power mirrors, Xenons and rear park assist.

It's got lowered sports suspension, 155 bhp and 400Nm of torque. The handling is excellent, with nice sharp steering, but it's also a very comfortable cruiser, with a ride quality that seems luxurious compared to the TT.

The build quality and materials are up to German standards and there's stacks of room inside, more than the A4 I reckon.

So are you convinced yet, can't wait to rush out and buy one ?

Seriously though, I had low expectations and these were blown away. In spite of the fact they're common as muck (not as common as a BMW 3 series though) I think it's fantastic !

My new baby ....

The wife brought one home the other day, I must say I was suitably impressed.

I like them. A lot. Think you've made a sound purchase there. The deals do take a lot of beating! Especially with the kit they throw at them, as you mentioned.

And you don't see as many Mondys about these days as you'd think. Certainly not in that spec, down in these parts anyway.

Nice choice... As Clarkson said the Mondeo ST is more exclusive than an Aston... :)

I really like them and I'd love to get one but I the insurance is still abit high for me atm :(

I read recently that Ford have no plans for an ST version of the new Mondeo, but you can spec one with the same bodykit as the Mondeo seen in Casino Royale...

Enjoy the new motor

I had a new mondeo back in 2003 first of the facelift versions, it was the 130 tdci ghia x estate version with a lot of the extras, wonderful car to drive, shame it fell apart badly, I had a friday night car I think as these arent generally unreliable cars, but my one was a stinker once it started going wrong. It was however a really nice drive and very good car for the money. It was however the final nail in the coffin for me and new cars.

My uncle has one, but will not let me have a go.:thumbdwn:

Nice. Was rather taken by a black one but was put off by the red leather it had.

And whats the MPG like?

My sister has one. Bizarrely she prefers it to the ST220 she used to have.

Diesel over petrol , whats the world coming to.

I prefer the power delivery on a newer diesel to a modern petrol, the modern diesels produce tons of grin inducing low end torque, a modern diesel feels a lot like a 70's, early 80's V6 or V8 in the way it makes its power, even modern V6 engines tend to be all about revving and so little brutal torque :(.

clarkson was talking about the mondeo ST200 not the new diesel variant. the ST200 was a special one off that was quiet different to a standard one not just body kit and standard diesel enge.

still like me though :)

I like my Mondeo too. The fall in price is daft from new. Mine cost about £4500 I reckon, which cost about £23700 new, 5 years ago.

I'm getting 40 mpg, not great for a diesel but still much less thirsty than the Octavia vRS or the TT.

fairly sure he was on about the ST220
