Without luck meaning the fault code did not go and there is no PAS at all.

Tried to clear the code and they re appeared

Any idea how to test current at the sensor?

Anybody?

Would really apreciate help here - Wheres Lumoox when you need him :D

Thanks uys I ll check them out

I ve seen a few articles about sensor problems but they are always related to Open or Short to positive

Whats the significance of the B+ here?

Short to battery positive (short to B+) or open circuit means there is a break in the wire or the consumer is disconnected.

You got the modified sensor on there yet?

Cheers Lummox - Top man

Yes we did put the modified sensor on there - It didnt resolve the issue

The question is how do we test the sensor when its on the car before its plugged into the pump -

Can you attatch a lead and see if a small bulb lights or does the steerng wheel need to turn before power will get to the sensor? The other two cables to the pump all lit the light up when the car was on.

Also whats the difference between the old and new sensor - I remember you saying one had a metal clip and the other as plastic - In my case both the new and old had metal on them.....

Thanks once aain Lummox - Its very kind!

There isnt much to check. I'd check the continuity to the three wires from the ECU to the sensor itself if that is ok then it can only be a faulty ECU.

Would you expect to have to tur the steering wheel for electricity to get to the sensor part?

Also how are the old and new sesors different - Are the new ones with plastic?

Old type sensor with a plastic end cap...

And the newer ones are metal.

On the sensor you will have one live, an earth and a signal.

Yes there should be an ignition live at the sensor iirc, but it may not be 12v remember.

And thats a new type sensor as the end cap over the sensor is metal.

The end cap is definitely plastic - Not metal

Difficultto see from the picture - buts its definitely plastic

The one on the ebay ad is deffo a modified metal end sensor.

Ah - I see - You re right ... :D

To recap if no current makes it to the sensor then the ECU needs checking - Is that what you are saying?

Cheers again

You have to check the current supply and the earth.

Lummox - Final question on this -

Are these sensors fairly straight forward to fit - Once you get to the socket is there only one way you can fit them - Can they accidentally be installed in the reverse order

Just trying to see what the mechanic might have done wrong because my moneys on the sensor not being fitted correctly

Do they just snap in to place regardless of which way they are installed or are they fiddly to fit

Cheers

The plug can be very tight to go on but will only fit one way. The sensor can go in either way up and as far as I know it makes no odds either way.

I take it you had a metal type sensor fitted?

  • Author

Yes - I had the metal sensor fitted

No luck with that error message - I ve replaced the pump (twice)

It now looks like I ll need to replace the sensor (twice), and possibly the ECU .

This PAS system has been the bain of my life - The rest of the car is really good

There was no current when the new sensor was fitted before it was plugged into the pump - Its just a small bulb so wouldnt ned much current to light....

Ay final ideas about what to do ?

Sorry you have lost me, how were you checking the current to the sensor? Not with it disconnected surely?

Hi,

Turn they key three quarters so that electrics are working but engine is off

Replace sensor - Attatch a light bulb (earth to battery earth) and live to one of the oins on the sensor plug - We tried all three plugs - If there is current the light will illuminate

This technique worked for the other two leads going into the power steering pump

Hope this makes sense - If it doesnt please ask and Ill ellaborate as best as I can

When the Fabia first came out and there were PAS issues we were advised to clean the earthing points in the engine bay. The reason that we were given was that they are threaded studs with a nut on them and prior to painting the nuts were not always screwed on all the way, allowing a layer of paint to interrupt the earth.
