Brake pad wear light

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Had the brake pad warning light come on whilst driving today...

My Octy is an 05 model - 17.5k miles - picked it up from the Skoda dealer on the 1st Feb this year (used model of course).

They said they would service it before I got it - I have no reason to say they didn't.

Now - if the pad were that low - surely they should have picked that up during the service / pre-delivery checks and changed them. I've only done 3k since having it.

Škoda Approved Used Cars

The Škoda Retailer Network have access to the most comprehensive selection of used Škoda vehicles.

To ensure that you receive the highest standards of quality and consistency all used Škoda's displayed on this website are supplied with all the benefits of The Retailer Approved Used Vehicle Programme.

A Retailer Approved Multi-point Check List ensures that each vehicle meets the highest standards of The Retailer Approved Used Vehicle Programme. The checklist accounts for the age and mileage of the vehicle, and any item not found to meet the required standards is corrected or repaired.

Did my brake pads meet highest standards?? What else have they "missed"...

What do you think?

Lee

To be getting a low pad warning means someone has driven the car hard (last minute breaking - everytime).

Not usually something which is covered by any warranty. Could try the dealer, and a really good one might replace them. I suspect though this would be down to you.

Earliest I've ever needed pads on last few new cars is 40K. My younger days I eat them regularly due to my boy racer driving style on my Clio 16v Turbo.

You could try it Lee but to be honest the brake pads are a wear item. 3k after you got it is a bit close to the bone.

You mean the Octy has a brake pad light? Mine doesn't even have a light to tell me the wash fluid is low. I thought it would be like my old Polo I had when I first started driving, you knew the brake pads needed changing when they grinded into the disc!!

Maybe things have moved on since then.

Looking back, that Polo was the fastest car I ever had, drove it like I'd pinched it!

Yes agreed - but if after 14k they must have been showing signs of wear and tear, so they should IMHO have replaced them during the pre-sale check - failing that - at least notify me that they will need doing in 3k miles.

Had this on a Nissan we had, dealer claimed to have checked the car over and full service before we picked it up. two weeks later had to get the AA out as the wheel trims were burning hot with abad smell of burning, Pad wer edown to bare metal. Dealer said they must have worn down as wear and tear, told him we'd only done 200miles in the car . Service guy said "ooh!" we will replace them for you FOC, nether went back after that, sold the car after 14months must unreliable car ever!

Sounds more like a sticking caliper at that mileage.

I have an Octavia, but what may be relevant here is our Fabia vrs had a brake problem where the pads were stuck in their containers due to clogging. This meant the front brakes were on (slightly and sometimes very noticeably) more often than not over at least a month and about 1000 miles. A couple of weeks ago the dealer replaced the pads and discs under warranty. The car is nearly 2 years old and had covered about 20k miles.

*Bump*

Car went to dealer Saturday morning - all pads and discs are fine - loads of wear on the pads - but I have a faulty sensor. They've ordered it and it's going back in two weeks time for fitting.

Glad my brakes are ok :)

*Double bump*

Just to update - Octavia had the new sensor fitted yesterday - along with a new cruise control switch which also became faulty!

What next??

Sensors are part of the pads. So did it have new pads? Or was it the fluid level warning.

Also worth noting when the lights do com eon for the pads they are normally about 60% worn.

intermittant fault with CC swich is a known problem with cars of this age - should be fixed under warranty and is not an issue on later cars.
