Fabia vRS towbar?

Featured Replies

XC wippet then hehe. That should throw in the back of a Fabia very easily, you could keep the back seats up and take boths wheels off and it will fit in the width of the car.

  • Something else to consider, as of April 2009 towbars will be part of the MOT test (being brought into line with the rest of the EU). So the question is, if the car is not approved for towing, and has

Hi Guys! Having just bought my 07 fabia vrs and now needing to tow my small caravan i REALLY need some advice as to where to buy a towbar etc.

I have read every single entry here, looked at all the photos submitted of vrs towbars but still need some help because i dont seem to be any further on.

Can somebody help?

What towbars are the ones fitted to the silver vrs pictured earlier here and also the red one?

What is the official line i.e. whether you can use one and by the looks of one entry - witter supplied and fitted it for someone.

Skoda are really starting to pee me off as along with this anomaly, my back brakes are squeeking like hell, my dash rattles and the finish on the alloys is appaling! - all at 1200 miles!!

Seriously, if anybody can shed some light on the towbar situation then please do!

Cheers Dave

Welcome to this forum - even though it doesn't look like you'll be here for long.

Skoda have not homologated the Fabia vRS here for towbar fitting.

It is illegal to fit a towbar never mind tow anything - and thus your insurance would be voided in any incident.

You should have considered this before buying the car.

Your only recourse is to buy another car to which you can legally fit a towbar.

You could of course keep the Fabia and RENT another car when you need to tow - assuming you can find a rental car with a towbar... :-)

Just to continue Turboman's question - When I ordered my Ltd edition I was told by a couple of local dealers that they had some customers with towbars fitted to their vRS.

There must be SOMEONE who can fit them without too much damage to the rear bumper and if not there is a market out there for them judging by the amount of people on the forum!

Any other suggestions besides buying/renting a towing car?

My Skoda Dealer in Poole will fit the Skoda Tow Bar for you! If Skoda fit it = must be ok against warrentee

Not entirely the case I'm afraid. A dealer can act independantly of Skoda UK, because they fit it doesn't necessarily mean it is ok with Skoda UK.

Did You read any of the thread?

Ill spell it out for you..... The Fabia Vrs is not approved for towing..... if you look at your log book the fields where it should show you the unbraked towing weight etc etc are blank.

If you fit a tow bar to the fabia vrs and use it for towing you will not be covered by your insurance.

Thansk

I assume you've read my earlier posts - perhaps you'd enlighten us as to why you want to fit one?

because im going on holiday and i need one.if thats ok with you m8.and knowbody on the thread gives me an exact model number.

and you are insured with 230 bhp

lol.

The part you require is the same as any other Fabia hatchback, just check towsure or your local dealer. Just say it's a Fabia TD hatch not vRS.

I have one in my shed if you want it.:)

If you're going on holiday I presume that's travelling on public roads - in which case towing with a Fabia vRS is ILLEGAL. Anyone helping you via this thread or elsewhere is aiding and abetting someone to break the law since you'd be travelling without insurance. I can't see why you're so persistant... Get another car with which towing is legal!

and you are insured with 230 bhp

lol.

Why would he not be?

Hail Keyboard Warrior for we are all in awe at his razor wit and fascinating insight!

That has to be one of the silliest comebacks I have ever read! You can get insurance for that, you can't for towing :P

As mentioned you can't tow with a VRS, it will void your insurance. If you decide to ignore this fact you can fit a regular fabia towbar to it, the details of which you can find here (This is dealer stuff)

Phew - read the first few pages and was wondering how long it would take for people to point out the facts!

It may seem a bit of an oversight for Skoda not to get the Fabia vRS approved for towing but they're not under any obligation to. I personally would benefit from being able to use mine for towing a trailer but, hey, its not the end of the world.

Actually No i am not, I just thought id risk everything and drive un-insured...... Fool!

All my mods are declared to my insurance, so :finger:

there isnt a part number cos there isnt a part, idiot!

If you wanted to fit a towbar for a bike carrier that may be legal but you would have to check that out.

I'd guess the lack of towing on a VRS could have something to do with the rear suspension not having enough rebound in it to deal with a caravan but regardless of the reason it isn't legal.

'Nuff Said :D

I have been meaning to get a definitive answer from my wife's insurer on this matter so I phoned NU Direct this lunchtime to ask if they would insure her Fabia vRS if a towbar was fitted. I explained that Skoda had not tested the car with a towbar, that no towing weight was specified for it, and that the V5C reflected that latter fact. My query was referred to their underwriters who confirmed that they would insure the car for towing. I didn't believe that answer so I phoned again and spoke to a Customer Manager. I went through the same facts following which he spoke to the underwriters and then phoned back with the same answer. We can fit a towbar and use the car for towing with no increase in insurance premium. Any trailer or caravan would only be covered for third party risks. And any damage caused to the car by fitting a tow bar would not be covered. So far so good.

I would anticipate that fitting a tow bar would invalidate any remaining manufacturer's warranty on body, engine, clutch, gearbox, suspension, brakes and just about everything else - which isn't good at all with nearly 2 year's warranty remaining.

Then there is the matter of Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1966 (as amended) which state that for M1 category vehicles the maximum permissible trailer weight is quoted by the vehicle manufacturer. Alternatively, the vehicle manufacturer may provide a maximum gross train weight (the laden weight of the trailer plus the laden weight of the towing vehicle). If this is exceeded it is possible that the Courts or Insurance Companies may take the view that this constitutes a danger. The Fabia vRS is in category M1, and has no quoted maximum permissible trailer weight or maximum gross train weight. It would be very easy to argue in the event of an accident that towing any weight at all with a Fabia vRS could constitute a danger, and that doing so breaches Construction and Use Regulations.

So, it's all very well the insurer saying its ok to tow but an entirely different matter if you were actually caught short while towing...

I looked into this at great length, even tried for a single type approval from VOSA, no joy. The only answer for a RHD was to get a Southern Irish car which is type approved. Failing that it would have to be LHD from the Netherlands or Germany where they are also type approved.

I had a tow bar fitted by the dealer for my cycle carrier after checking with local plod, insurance etc, but due to there being no train weight I was advised by plod that it would be a road traffic offence if I chose to tow a trailer.
