Fatal crash on gumball 3000

muppets!

From what I can gather, two competitors in their 911 turbo crashed into a Golf in Macedonia killing the driver and seriously injuring the passenger.... Worst of all, they legged it and allegedly tried to leave the country in the BMW of one of the competitors. Only got caught at the border after the authorities were alerted!

Complete and utter ******* -- hope they throw away the keys.

Very POOR behaviour :thumbdwn:

But why do it?

Beyond all logic....

Complete and utter ******* -- hope they throw away the keys.

That's too easy. Leaving the keys within sight, but out of reach is much more effective :D

I'm guessing thats the end of the Gumball then

Surprised it's not happened sooner really. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the end of all Gumball-style rallies.

yea same here they all get massive warning before the start about not being stupid etc but i guess this year its not gone in properly :(

When caught up in the moment, I'm sure everyone can get a bit reckless. We don't know what caused the 911 to crash, but it could have been anything that took the driver by surprise at a time when the car wasn't in the best situation to cope with it.

madness!

As some know I have completed a few Cannonballs. These events attract the odd **** & Ive met a few, loads of money, expensive car & cant drive but the majority are just normal guys trying to have a good time. Ive sneaked through a road block, been detained at borders for a chat & stopped by Police for the same but always following the antics of some other **** .

Its unwise to draw conclusions without the full facts as we all know what sensationalists the press can be. BUT one report does annoy me. If they left the scene then any sympathy I might have had whatever the facts might turn out to be has gone. Whatever you do you should face the consequences & if there are injured people then its a no brainer..

As to whether this will finish this type of event or not I think the days were numbered anyway, certainly for the high publicity events. One of the reasons I had moved away from the Cannonball to another event.

Organised events like the mongul rally that lean towards endurane rather than speed are becoming more popular & I believe this is the way forward. I know of one event organiser who was already looking at events you would need a 4x4 to complete with some serious off road sections. That would slow speeds down & still offer a challenge, in fact probably much more of a chalenge as anyone can pilot a toy at 200 mph down a motorway.

The down side for anyone who drives in our closest European neighbours countries is that it will give the Police more justification to blatantly target british drivers, a trend that started a couple of years ago.

Whatever we say this is a tragedy & it has cost a probably inocent person their life & brought grief to a whole family, OK they will have to live with what they have done for the rest of their lives but if its true they cant even face up to their responsibilties at the time I have no sympathy whatsoever

Can anyone decode the commentary on this ??

If you run the video it appears to be at a junction, did the Golf pull out or another car at the junction cause it, OK they ran but was the run due to excessive alcohol content from the night befores party. Before the do gooders flame me Im not making excuses, just trying to be objective & learn more. Its interesting how the locals are given free access to a potential crime schene !

The less sensational press reports are starting to come through. It appears they left the scene after the Ambulances had taken the others to hospital. Im glad if this is indeed true.

Pair held after Gumball death crash

Macedonian police are questioning two Britons following a fatal accident during an international car rally.

Organisers of the Gumball 3000 closed the race down following the death of Vladimir Cepulyoski, 67, from Macedonia.

Mr Cepulyoski died in hospital from a heart attack after the crash on Wednesday. He had not been involved in the race.

The Foreign Office said Nicholas Morley and Matthew McConville were taking part in the rally when they hit another car in Macedonia.

Ivo Kotevski, a Macedonian police spokesman, said the pair would testify before an investigative magistrate before a decision would be made on whether to hold them in custody.

"Two British citizens left the scene of the accident. Shortly afterwards, border authorities found them in another (vehicle) at the Qafasan border crossing with Albania," he said.

The Gumball 3000 has been a draw for the rich and famous for almost a decade, speeding through Europe in high powered sports cars by day and enjoying lavish parties by night.

It is believed the two men waited at the scene until ambulance crews arrived to help the driver of the second car, before rejoining the race towards the Albanian border.

It is thought the men reported the accident to police when they arrived at the border, and were asked to give statements.

But it is believed that as they returned to the border to continue their trip they were told the other person involved had died and were taken back to a nearby police station.

all the cars had trackers in so you could view them follow the gumball, from the proximity of the cars and apparent lack of damage to the porka id doubt they were doing the claimed 150mph that one report made. im sure the gps data could reveal all.
