Anyone With A 1.4 TDI

Featured Replies

What are these engines like for speed and fuel and any problems.

What do you guys think of the Suzuki Swift anyone here driven one.

Cracking little cars, went to London last weekend, sticking to the speed limit 70ish,it did 58 mpg,if you cruise much faster than the speed limit, then you could get 49 mpg, usually i get 52-54 mpg.they have plenty of power for overtaking and don't notice hills, but below 1900rpm there isn't much go in it. I,ve had it for nearly 18 months ,with no problems at all.

Thanks, this business looking for a new car gets more difficult each time.

The 1.4TDI is a 3 cylinder engine that's surprisingly good! As long as you can put up with the low speed rattling/vibrations. Economy is very good and performance is not bad at all too.

Used ones are like rocking horse poo though.

The Polo with the same engine is much more common, and although a tad pricey is a better car imho.

Cracking little car - went out yesterday with 4 pass & me - barely noticed the difference - economy - excellent (as long as you don't go mad,and even then it's still good) -road holding - reminds me of the golf - point and drive - .

Don't forget it's a 1.4 tdi with a 3 cylinder engine -not a VRS - .

OH BTW- look at the rear footwell for damp and the recorded problems with rear door seals.

Reminds me of a circa late 1970's suzuki sport .

Oohh, off topic I know, but the Swift gti was an awesome little car that sounded like an F1 machine.

They did self destruct though.

My mate bought a new one, and it was worth as much as a loaf 3 years later.

I had a 'Y' plate Polo 1.4 TDI sport and it ranks amonst one of the best cars I have had ( better than the newer '02' one I had )

a cracking little engine is the 1.4 3cylinder tdi. very good on fuel, i did 50k in my little polo before i sold it and didnt have a problem. mine was chipped to 100bhp and went like a little rocket for a small car.

I drove a Roomster with the 1.4 TDi. TBH I didn't like it much. It wasn't the fact it felt sluggish, it was the noise. Sounded like an old Transit Van to me. Couldn't get on with it. But it went well enough I guess and I did thrash it to death. :D

SWMBO has one and to be honest I find it nicer to drive than the 1.4 16v petrol which I have just bought for myself. It feels quicker too, despite having 25 BHP less. Plus it sounds like it has twice as many cylinders as it actually has. I guess you either love the noise or hate it though. Personally I like it!

Yup, a great noise, and although lacking in horses, suprisingly quick, and a re-map will give it 100bhp without too much trouble.

They do get a tad breathless though.

I should imagine with an aftermarket exhaust/air filter etc and a re-map it will be in vRS territory, performance wise, as they weigh a lot less.

I may be wrong though.

nope you are very right there mr grumpy.

my old polo with just a re-map would keep up with my brothers ibiza 130bhp sport all day long. i think they sound almost v6 like being half of one thats not supprisin.

re Suzuki Swift (sport) , i can echo AG Morleys comments , it just doesn't have a boot space and the rear seat won't fold flat , Sport goes well though , good turn in and easy to get the back out if your that way inclined

Hi 1.4Tdi now 74K no engine problems and all rattles sorted (thanks to Lummox). Fantastic economy. On average runs (motorway plus suburban traffic) it's no problem to get 70mpg . Performance is there if you want it with (for the size and weight) really good acceleration. Doesn't use oil. To be honest I regretted buying it for a year due to a number of things, but now I get a lot of satisfaction from driving and feel comfortable and confident in any situation. I also tow a trailer at times which is un-noticeable with 500kg on it. All in all a great car and I'd buy another one if this was taken in the night by Martians.

Echo the above - driven an Audi A2 with this lump & it's surprisingly good. I'd have one over the 1.9 SDi any day

I also have a 1.4 fabia TDI 70pk. It find the noise great, it almost sounds likes a sportscar :p

It's my first TDI and you can feel the turbo. It lasts until rev count 2000 until the turbo acts but when it does you can feel it for while it lasts. The fuel economy is great. This year we'll drive (4persons) from Belgium to Italy with this car, I hope this works out ;)

Just make sure you pump up your tyres to the correct laden pressure.

Had one of these today whilst the good folks at Saville's had our Golf in for service.

What a cracking little car! It felt quicker and livelier than our PD100 combi, and went around corners very nicely.

Only 75hp? My ****.
