SEat gets the Golf GTI engine....and the DSG Gearbox !!!!!!!

Mike you are obsessed with DSG. I don't understand why you keep harping on about it, at present it's not an option so you either need to accept that or look elewhere to a manufacturer who does.

Drive one for an extended period and it is plain boring - sorry.

Having said that it is seemless, quicker than a manual (and except where it has lower gearing in the PDs) it has better economy and emissions.

But given all that what has the DSG ever done for us?

You realise if they sold a Skoda that looked like a Golf GTI, handled like a Golf GTI, had the engine of a Golf GTI and the gadgets/ trim levels and technology of the Golf GTI for 15% less than a Golf GTI, VW wouldn't sell any Golf GTIs !!

The whole VAG range from AUDI to SKODA is a political ball game from model to model and country to country. (excluding pressumably Bugatti, Bentley and Lambo and of course the certifiable Phaeton :confused: )

..... it has better economy and emissions.

How come?

However, here are a few quotes:-

"Changes are very smooth, and the system couldn't be easier to operate. You simply pull one paddle to shift up, and the other to shift down."

"However, in Drive, or the more responsive Sport setting, the DSG transmission isn't as good as a conventional automatic box, and changes feel both clumsy and hesitant - so the system isn't flawless."

"However, it's all too easy to slot the transmission into auto and leave it there, which defeats the object of a go-faster model. So even though it's good fun, the manual Leon is still the more entertaining choice."

A mixed bag! IMHO the DSG is probably OK as a track day toy if you want to play at being Jason Plato, but if you want an auto get one OR (my preference) stick to the manual and YOU be in control, not some box of electronics.

The DSG box can't handle as much torque as the manual either, so if you wanted to remap it, bare that in mind.

its plain boring [to drive]

Before I ordered my vRS, I was tempted to go for an L+K with the DSG box.

Skoda provided a demo car for the weekend, so I did get plenty of time to try out the box in a variety of situations.

Quite frankly, I hated it. If you want to accelerate quickly in a straight line, then it's great. Otherwise, I found it incredibly frustrating. I had one particularly scary moment, when I had to do an emergency stop, and the transmission simply didn't disengage the clutch. I found the car being dragged forward against the brakes. Fortunately, it didn't add that much more distance to my stop, but it was really worrying.

In addition, the lack of paddles on the Skoda, really puts you off driving it in manual mode. As an auto, then it was okay, but not as good as a real auto (which defeats the purpose, really).

If you are buying any kind of performance VAG car, then you are probably the kind of person who enjoys 'spirited' driving around the twisty B-roads that the UK has in abundance. Why you'd want to dull that pleasure fighting with a 'too clever for it's own good' gearbox is beyond me.

Skoda do not sell the DSG box in the petrol cars, they are conventional 6 speed automatics. In fact VW group only sell the DSG in the1.4tfsi, 1.8 tfsi, 2.0 tfsi and 3.2 V6 in the Octavia/leon/Golf/A3, the other engines use the conventional tiptronic box.

So it's not a fair assumption as even looking at the engines and gearboxes on the Audi site, not all of the petrols with the DSG (S tronic) box have better fuel economy.

On another note, it's more exciting using a manual gearchange over auto, autos are dull and detract to driver enjoyment as there is less to get involved in.
