Faulty MAF....... YOU WHAT!!!

Featured Replies

Ok, ive had a CAI on the car for the last year without any problems, it was one of those eBay ones, but i got bored of the sound, so a few weeks ago i took it off and put the standard one back on.

Ever since then the engine light has been on, im getting various errors which all point to the MAF being faulty!!!

Ive taken the MAF off and cleaned it, also cleaned the throttle body whilst i was at it, and had the lights reset about 4 times but the light is still on

The dealer is now advising that the MAF is fault and needs replacing, but how can changing the airfiler make it fault, i didnt even touch the MAF when changing the filters over??

Im very confused.

Any advise?

Possible that the MAF got contaminated by airfilter oil, or was just on its way out in any case. Better vagcom it to make sure, the MAF sensor is pretty pricey IIRC...

Yeah, had it on vag com 4 times mate, no joy.

Can get a new one from VW for

could be you damaged it when you cleaned it. The actual sensor is only a very small thin piece of wire across a gap.

The thing is very sensitive, so I would suggest that you clean and re-oil your filter making sure there is only a minimal amount of oil on the filter. Touching the inner side with kitchen roll to absorb any excess might be an idea.

Also check all the pipes are sealed tightly so that dirt or water etc can't get in.

I'd then give the MAF another clean, and try it again and if it fails put a new one in.

That way any excess oil that is on the CAI from this clean will be depositied on the old MAF not the new one :)

Cheers cheezemonkhai, but ive not got the CAI on now, got bored of it :)

When cleaning it, I used contact cleaner from Halfords and sprayed half a can over the sensor. The sensor looked like 2 little beams of metal going down, prob 1mm thick.

Ps, this was directly on the MAF sensor and not through the housing, i managed to unscrew it and pull it out, plus i didnt touch the sensor with the nozzle just incase. But the warning light was on before I cleaned it.

Its looking like another

Have you checked that the little pipe that goes to the airbox and hidden below the main pipe is attached.

Not sure if it would cause this, but it is an easy one to knock off by accident.

MAF's aren't really supposed to be cleaned, it's a short term bodge up that IMHO isn't worth it.

You are talking circa

have you tried it with the CAI back on?now that would be weird if it cleared.

Found the problem, not the MAF, split pipe leaking near the inlet manifold causing mixture to run lean and idle high!!!
