VAG to buy Proton??

Featured Replies

Was talking to a rep tonight whilst Fabia launch was taking place and he told me that Volkswagen are taking over another company!

Proton.

The deal is not done and dusted but it is going ahead.

Anyone else heard of this?

Thanks

Yep, did pop up on radar for me - from Evo or Pistonheads?

Steve

P.S. Why is this in Fab Mk2? General Car Chat perhaps? :rubchin:

Thought Proton was another GM company?

Ummm, I'm not sure about that. They've certainly had tie-ins with Mitsubishi, since the late 80s, using old designs, some joint ventures and using their engines. But not sure if that included any Proton ownership stake.

I thought ownership was prodominantly with the Malaysian government?

Steve

Moved to car chat.

And don't Proton own Lotus? :rubchin:

Rob.

i was looking at proton's on a display thing in the shopping centre the other day... and they do look really nice cars, high spec too, leather etc...

Indeed - 2.0T Elise anyone?

Or will the 'VW, with handling by Lotus' tagline start appearing in marketing blurb?

Steve

If lotus could fix the handling problems of VW it could only be a good thing.

The Octy MKI and fabia MK I are pretty damn poor from stock.

Yep Proton own Lotus.

Hope this doesn't delay the new esprit again!!

Cheers

But would you buy one Tom?

Proton are currently not owned buy anyone and yes they do own lotus. there is alot of speculation about vw buying proton but at the moment they are only in a sharing knowledge type state. i think its something along the lines of vw share there knowledge and proton let them use there malaysian factory to build vw`s (cheaper) and also get them selves into the malaysian market.

Got a proton press release dealer thingy somewhere from proton uk will dig it up

I read about this months ago , hasn't the deal been done yet?
