Cambelt came off on TDi 1.9 (110)

Featured Replies

Yep, cambelt came off - found out later it was not a genuine part

Any idea if it has wrecked the engine??????

someone said to me this engine will be okay ,,, any ideas - I heard no bangs

Some engines are designed so that the valves and pistons don't meet when a belt fails. Not sure if this applies to the 1.9tdi , but generally you hear it when there's damage done

Hope it is good news, and that there is no damage.... what mileage had that belt done before it came off?

I don't know of any diesels that are not an interference design off the top of my head.

This is due to the high compression ratios required, which means they can't really leave a big space at the top so an open valve doesn't get impacted.

I would place my money on that engine being a mess myself :(

Probably worth having a fish around the breakers yards for prices on second hand engines so you have a comparison price for engine + fitting and can make a judgement when the news comes in.

EDIT:

Just a thought, I take it that it is the cambelt and not the aux belt which is right by the cam belt?

If the cam belt was recently changed, I would guess that they may not have replaced the tensioners, which if they let the belt go slack could have allowed it to come off.

Cheers guys - now just sitting and waiting - The new belt had done 21k (76k when it came off but was replaced at 55k)

Just waiting now - do you know whats a real bitch - its that I was hoping for a nice holiday this year! Spose what god gifts he taketh away or whatever the quote is.

Ahh well it's only money! (damn!)

Who did the replacement? If it was a garage and you've got an invoice, you may have a case against them in these circumstances.
