Tyres and Geometry

Featured Replies

I've an Octavia 4x4 with standard suspension....

Had 4 x Dunlop SP01's which have lasted 8,000 miles.

The front insides and the rear outsides were very worn, so I realise that tracking was out....

I had 4 x Toyo Proxes TR-1 fitted with laser alignment.

After that the car seemed to jump/skit around so I checked the pressures and they were all out.

I've settled for 29 front and 31 rear - I might try upping the pressure but the 'grip' doesn't seem to be as good as the Dunlops.

i.e. I used to be able to do 20mph on dry, smooth tarmac , jerk the wheel and the back-end wouldn't move - now it slips out?

I've dug out some old posted geometry settings which I may take to the garage....

Am I driving faster, is my driving getting worse or could the garage have used the wrong settings?

The garage also said that I needed a new front left stabiliser bar - could this throw things out?

A worn-out roll-bar link will affect things yes, so get that sorted before anything else other than tyre pressures. Your quoted pressures seem "funny" to me; IME the rear pressures are usually 2psi or so lower than the fronts for a lightly-loaded car.

I run 30 psi all round on my 4x4 on NCT5's and have done for the last 40k, the wear is pretty even, slightly worn on outside fronts. Get about 18k out of the fronts more out of the backs. Only had normal tyre shop tracking done ever, but since having new rollbar and bushes think it needs doing again as its a bit twitchy.

How do you get the tail to step out at 20?

I'll try 30 all round - Musky I've seen an old post of yours where you thought the car was too twitchy with more pressure - I agree....

The back out - its basically a big car-park where I yank the wheel and keep upping the speed and going in circles until there's movement at the back - it was impossible with the Dunlops.

I'll have to go back to the garage and ask about the settings... its probably just me and my driving style

Another thought; what's the car park surface like? There's a recently resurfaced corner near me where the FWD Octys felt a bit taily, but that seems to have been down to the broken surface, since that's the only thing that's changed.

Had 4 x Dunlop SP01's which have lasted 8,000 miles.

8k? I've never had a set last less than 30K

Perhaps you don't spend your leisure time doing doughnuts in car parks .... :P
