Custom air intake system for the mongrel?

Featured Replies

One thing to bear in mind is if you ever have to drive through a flood, you do not want the air intake too low as to hydraulic the engine after all of the effort you have put into making it go so well.

P.S thanks for the vent, it arrived today but i missed postman pat.

No probs. The vent would still be 18" or more above the ground so would hopefully not suffer. I'm sure in rain my current way the air intake is done does take in some water.

Why not cut a hole in the bonnet or wing and have a cone filter sticking out :D

I would essentially be cutting a hole in that panel, but the cone would be the other side.

I shall talk to Allard when I get my car tomorrow. It's about ready. Says it still smokes but it is "rather" fast now. :D:thumbup:

What diameter MAF housing are you running and how close to being maxxed out is the sensor (if it isn't already)?

It's the standard vRS MAF - at a guess the diameter of the pipe at the MAF is around 60mm? Have no idea on the MAF's range and what it's doing at the moment. That kind of thing is beyond me. :)

I'm not trying to tell allard how to do their job and diesel tuning could be entirely different. However I do know on 1.8T's for example if the MAF is maxxed then you won't get anymore power until you move to a larger housing. That could explain for instance why you've hit 250bhp and can't get anymore. Prehaps something to discuss with them.

Regarding the question of intakes. I prefer an airbox with a turbo as it helps reduce lag to the 'resevoir' of air it holds ready for when you put your foot down. However I know the Fabia airboc is a little on the small side. For your car I'd look at something like the BMC carbon dynamic airbox (CDA) which consists of a new carbon fibre sealed airbox with a cold pipe which can be routed to a bumper grille or similar. The other advantage of an airbox is it's quiter than an open filter which I think would be a good choice on a diesel.

I will talk to Allards about BMC as I know they're a dealer/stockist. :)

Lloyd uses the BMC on his racing Golf, so it must be better over the PD160 items.

If it's just a BMC you're after you might as well get the Ripspeed knock off one from Halfords for

Get on with it and show us some pics!
