BP Ultimate diesel

Featured Replies

At last fill-up, I decided to try BP Ultimate diesel in my standard spec. Fabia vRS.

Although the premuim was 10p/litre, I still though it was worth a try. BP's advertising hints at 10% performance improvement due to higher rating.

Can't say I notice any difference though.

Won't be filling-up with this again.:thumbdwn:

I've heard mixed review about this aswell!

ive not used it yet cause theres nowhere local that stocks it. apparantly its better for the engine aswell though? maybe worth the premium on that front, but no the performance if it doesnt seem to do anything

They say it takes 2-3 tank fulls to feel the full effect, but after running that through mine, I didn't notice any difference at all over Tesco City Diesel (apart from the fact I was a lot poorer!) I now run Tesco diesel with Millers Power Sport 4 and can notice a big difference with that! :D

I always use ultimate (would use shell extra if I had a shell station near me, due to better price) and it runs so well.... since I had the new car, I've always used ultimate, now last week, I was caught out and forced to fill up with standard esso diesel, and for the first time I got my car to smoke!

can't say it gives a noticable improvement in power, but it is a higher cetane rating, and it's deffo cleaner :)

when I had the vRS I noticed the ultimate would give a very slight increase in fuel economy, so this offset the price... still means it's better to fill up with the special shell stuff though lol....

is the millers stuff a noticable differance then? can you bring a bottle to the new forest meet, so I can buy it off you and have a try? (haven't seen any for sale near me...)

You need to use at least three tank fulls of it to notice any real difference. I used it whilst I was on a nine week course during which I did about 1800 miles and I did notice a big difference, particularly the extra zip and less noise from cold. There wasn't much of a difference in price where I filled up, at least not the 10p a litre extra near where I live.

The only problem I found was as I did not continue to use it and put normal diesel in the car took a while to adjust and it didn't run as well. It was a bit like the cold turkey effect.

Could use ordinary BP diesel and a shot of Millers Sport 4?

The only bottle I have is a 5 litre one of the stuff, but if my syringe arrives in time, I might treat you to a shot ;)

Biggest difference I noticed was less smoke.

Try using Millers diesel additive, has the same effect with cheaper fuel!

Yep I agree with this, I have used it all and it's all the same.

I ran my octavia on it for a few tank fulls.

It didn't show straight away , but it was a bit quieter , a bit less smokey , and it warmed up a smidge faster. It was possibly a little bit quicker too but it was hard to tell.

At the time it was 4p a litre more than their standard diesel which I would probably have been happy to pay but the problem was that BP's standard diesel was also 5p a litre more than the other local garages and 9p a litre premium was too much

Had the VRS down to Alton Towers weekend of 19th May seen a Black VRS and an SE when I was there, good to see I am not the only big kid who owns a VRS. :D

Anyway to the point have used BP Ultimate since buying the car, but was forced to fill up in Cheadle on arrival they only had ordinary diesel so filled up with that.

Turned the key all was fine but did notice a few more plumes of black smoke on the cheaper stuff, as for performance not that much of a difference, BP Ultimate slightly better plus less smoke.

With mods it definitely makes a positive difference to fuel economy and performance. You don't notice it going up but run a month on ultimate then fill up with normal diesel & it's like driving with the handbrake on.

We did timed runs too & it makes more difference than you'd think

Like Chris rightly states you need to run at least 3 or 4 tanks of it through before you see a difference though. Fill up once with it and you're wasting your money.

Edit: That's with a Dragon box on, not standard. Never tested it while the car was standard.

I used to use Shell Optimax (petrol) a lot and did find that emmissions improved when using this (MOT test data).

I also noticed that even though it physically cost more per tank I got more miles per tank and was surprised to find out that the cost per mile was less than normal supermarket Unleaded. The other thing I noticed was that I normally drive the same route and found that most times using Optimax I could drive up the biggest hill without having to change down (sticking to the speed limits) while with the normal Unleaded most of the times I had to change down.

I stopped using Optimax though as the price increased too much that it wiped out the financial benefit of lower fuel cost per mile.

What I suggest you do with this BP stuff is run it for a number of tankfulls and work out the cost per mile per tank and then compare that to the cost per mile using normal Supermarket Diesel.

I'd also suggest you do the same with this millers stuff - i.e. millers with BP Ultimate and Normal Diesel with Millers. Work out the cost per mile if its less or equal then certainly go for it - if its more then you really need to be certain that there is a real performance benefit and your not just imagining it.

Any long term benefits for the engine are rather a non issue as no doubt you will be changing the car so who cares what happens to it after you have sold it?

With BP Ultimate having a cetane level of 55 (standard diesel is 51) there is bound to be a marginal difference in performance, whether it's noticeable though in the real world is another matter.

It's certainly not worth the 10p per litre premium to me and I'll always go for the cheapest fuel (so long as it meets EN590) as it's all just going to get burnt anyway & it still gets me from A to B ! :D

Each to their own though ! :)

So its a 10% premium .... ouch that is a lot for very little added value.

Or put it another way if your currently always averaging 50mpg you need it to up the mpg to 55mpg consistently...is that possible?

Not really.

I posted a thread about cetane rating a while back that explained what it was and how it worked. It's all about the fuel's eagerness to burn and the injection timing. A lot of diesels don't have the cognative capacity to deal with the change in cetane and the fuel will make 0 difference, those that can will just have a little more eagerness in their fuel. It isn't going to make a 5 mpg difference. Even Millers doesn't have that amount of overall effect and if you worked it out thats not cost effective either. People just use it for that extra little bit of Ommph

It might as well be Snake Oil :D

How about Shell VMax? Thats cheaper than BP so the extra MPG per tank needed wouldnt be as high to make it financially viable.

Possibly.

If I could get it I'd try it

I've been using this in my 1998 1.9 tdi Passat 110 for a few weeks now and its very noticable. My car sounds like a tractor at the best of times due to having an older diesel engine, but at speed with this fuel in the tank it sounds silky smooth, at 70 it possitivly hums. It also give better throttle response. Acceleration is alot better and acctually makes me comfortable with overtaking on country roads. I think the reason you won't notice alot of difference on the PD130 is its already chock full of tech to make the engine more responsive. They are already excellent engines as it is. The next car i buy is going to have one of them in it :P

Yes there is a world of difference between the old 110bhp & the PD engines (even the 115TDI PD) they have so much extra torque.

I read a comment on some blog not long ago "VAG TDI130 power to the people" - very true.

Have to comment that ultimate made virtually bugger all difference on the old 110 for me, but shell extra makes a big difference.

Shell Diesel Extra fan here - less smoke, roughly same price where I live, so I tend to go for that.

Performance wise there is no difference notable by myself, but the smoke factor is important to me. On standard BP derv it smokes like crazy...

Yes sorry, I also should have said that shell derv extra has no performance difference that i noticed, but did cull the smoke under full chat.

It is the same price as normal shell fuel though, so IMHO well worth it :D

Have you seen the you tube santa pod run by Jabba Luke.... so much smoke you cannot see him perhaps he should use this

I 100% agree, I like the Shell Diesel Extra.

Having to use BP at the moment, the two local Shell are having a tart up so they be shut for 6 weeks, noticed the smoke after about a tankfull though.
