Safe to use Molyslip or STP gearbox additive?

Featured Replies

Folks,

Anyone foresee any issues with using either Molyslip or STP gearbox additive in the gearbox of my 4X4 Octavia? It states that it should not be put into gearboxes with Limited Slip Diffs which makes sense.

I believe that as there is no actual limited slip capability in the box and that as the slip sensing is controlled by the ABS sensors and then power transfer via Haldex unit, that it should be safe to use?

However I still have a nagging doubt and don't want to end up with problems and no drive! Already spent a small fortune recently and don't want to spend anymore if I can help it, at least not for a while. Just looking to reduce any friction issues there may be in the box.

Anybody got any views on this?

Thanks,

Steve

These are ok but try Lucasoil.com there pure synthetic stabilizer is the best on the market. You can use it also in the diff and engine for ultimate protection with no running probs or warranty questions.

But there ordinary Gear oil is race spec anyway without high costs of other additives but thats up to you.

By the way they're the oil supplier to K&N workshops throughout USA and are used by most of the Drag Racing teams (hence high spec)

Cheers for that I'll have a look at them, and I've thanked you as well:thumbup:

I wouldn't put them in a gear box at all.

IMHO they cause problems with the synchro rings and make changing a right pain.

If you are thinking you have problems, I would suggest a full oil and filter (if the 4x4 diff has one) change.

I have to agree with cheezmonkhai there are no benefits to be had by using any of the oil additives engine or gearbox and they can cause more harm than good

When i did my box using fully synthetic it got rid of the second gear crunch from cold that it had been suffering for some time, it does have to be driven for a couple

of hundred miles after the change before you notice the difference but the difference is very noticable

A full oil & filter change will benefit you far more than adding gloop

And I would endorse Cheezemonkhai and Antic's view of gearbox additives!

I used molyslip in the gearbox of a 1972 model volkswagen 411 many years ago, think that it would make a difference, it certainly did the gearbox failed leaving me stranded in a car park, I agree with the comments expressed, a good gearbox oil change is a more sensible idea

What about SAWDUST...:sofahide:

LOL   ....Is BillyGeorge still about?

No in all serious I'd agree with whats already been said, make sure you've got fresh and decent quality oil in there first before considering additives.
