I currently drive a 2000 reg Lexus IS200 which is a lovely car but of late I am really fancying an Octavia Estate.

My dilema is do I go for the VRS petrol or the VRS Diesel.

So a couple of questions :

1) Although the Petrol is quicker 0-60 does the diesel with its torque pull as quick when over taking or is the petrol handsdown quicker overall ?

2) How do they comapre overall

3) How do they compare spec wise ?

Also can you suggest extra that I should get put on when buying.

Hi Chris,

I had the same dilemma when I was looking to order.

Generally, the petrol is quicker overall. However, on a twisty B-road, there is virtually nothing in it. If you are going to do straight line sprints, then the petrol will win.

Personally, I love the way the power is delivered in the TDi, especially the extra torque, which just makes general driving and overtaking so easy.

Combine this with the extra mpg, lower tax (as I'm a company car driver) and cheaper insurance and you've got a very tempting combination in the TDi. That's why I ordered one, and will taking delivery tomorrow.

The best way to decide is to test drive them both.

Spec. wise, both cars are identical in every way, except for the engine.

As for options, then I'd definitely go for the following:

Dual zone climate, rear leccy windows, jumbo box (currently a freebie if you order before 30th June).

Maxi-dot display (it finishes the dash off very nicely, you'll regret it if you don't get it).

Xenon headlights

Currently, you can also get free 18" alloys, so you may as well have them too.

If you've got the budget for it, then I'd also add the following:

Rain sensor, light assist, auto dimming mirror

Rear parking sensors

Curtain airbags

On mine, I've also got heated front seats. They still aren't listed as a standard option, but the dealer can do it. If you do a search on here, you will find the thread where we managed to get Skoda to agree to allow them on UK cars.

The petrol and the diesel is very similar to 0-60mph/0-100kmt, but from 0-160kmt, the petrol is much faster, about 5 sec

There is a bluetooth option, but Skoda UK don't have it on their options list.

Seemingly, it's available everywhere on mainland Europe, just not here.

VRStu is currently working on an article which documents how to retrofit the Skoda bluetooth to a UK car. However, it doesn't sound like it will be a cheap option, so you might be better off with a Parrot kit (or something similar).

With regards to the options, I would also be tempted to go for sunset glass (an estate only option).

I test drove the two of them almost back to back (24hr between).

It's really surprising how similar the two cars are. The diesel is very fast and the petrol has lots of torque. The petrol is that little bit faster I suppose.

It came down to maths for me, I'm not doing high mileage anymore and I wasn't going to save much over 3yr with the diesel. Maybe enough to cover the

The sunset glass is worth getting if the budget stretches to it.

Don't even think of speccing the Sat nav, you can DIY it far far cheaper.

I won't touch the manufacturers SATNAV, I have it fitted in my Lexus and the "off the shelf" systems are for more flexible POI, speed camera alerts etc.

Plus the updated CD/DVD's are very expensive. You could almost afford to buy a new Tomtom every year.

I am assuming that Sunset glass is like privicy glass, I put tints on the Lexus (rear only) due to the children having DVD screens in the back and the posts are right it is definatly worth it, Also IMo it enhances the look of the car.

You either love weasels or hate em I would imagine the vRS TDI is good for 450-500 miles per tank if driven normally, that's cool on my wallet at least.

The factory tint is not as dark as your Lexus IS by a mile, they are still very effective in what they do, they obscure anything on the back seats and block out a sensible amount of light but it all down to the demands of your little'uns is it not?

The dealer supplied sun shades are a good alternative to tints.

Go careful with the current 'freebie' offer, 18" Alloys, Dual Zone & Jumbo Box are only available if the car is registered before the end of this month. I heard today that Skoda UK are importing a load 'ready' to go but they are just the basic car with ONLY these options.

That will probably be enough to tempt most people into signing on the dotted line, those goodies make a real difference to the car and it saves the dreaded 8-10 week wait.

Difficult to say - makes it very hard to see in from the outside though!

I am still awaiting news on the 5.1% APR and 3-years FREE servicing deal - dealer will know by 25th June if it is to continue.

If you are not financing, obvioulsy this wont matter. (Taking SUK finance is a prerequisite for the FREE servicing - it is not a stand alone offer AFAIK)

My previous 2.0TDI was always loaded with tools and ladders (see pic) and it spent most of it's time sitting in the M25 traffic or "normal" motorway cruising speeds. It averaged overall 42 MPG but if driven sensibly would return 48-50 MPG fully laden.

Best I ever got was 58-60MPG, Totally empty car + 55-60 on the motorway.

Petrol vRS for me and I drive like a hooligan but average around 26 mpg. Others are achieving a lot better fuel economy than me but they drive like 'girls'

Thats the sort of figures that I return in the Lex, I am sick of filling it up !!

If you believe the sales blub, the Petrol should be 35+ and the diesel 45+

On tickover the TDI may be a bit 'bus like' BUT the TFSI engine with its direct fuel injection is not exactly silent on tickover either!!

On full throttle? TDI sounds like a grizzly bear on heat !!

I have the vRS TDI and am getting a solid 41 - 43mpg with pretty brisk driving; 45+ will be a possibility on a gentle M'way cruise and it will dip just below 40mpg if let rip.

I reasonably reckon the TFSI engine is 10mpg worse that this on 'like for like' driving.

I bought the TDI for 4 principal reasons;
