New Ibiza Cupra or keep the Sport?

Featured Replies

My wife currently has an '02 Seat Ibiza TDI Sport (PD130), it's done 119k, drives very well, has a few stone chips and dings, the wheels are kerbed (by previous owner), and the interior is pretty good as I've just fitted replacement Seat sport seat covers. We've had a few problems recently most of which have been sorted but the Climate Control has never worked as far as the air con part goes.

We are currently umming and arring over whether to keep the Sport (which we own outright), get the AC fixed, sort the dings and refurb/replace the wheels. or; p/x it towards a brand new Ibiza Cupra PD160 which will mean taking finance out of around

I guess it comes down to why you're looking to change. If the car is up to the job (and the air con can be fixed relatively cheaply) then it seems silly to trade it in, however, if, like me, she likes to change her cars every few years, then so long as you can afford to change, then the PD160 should be a good buy :D

Or, you could buy a 2nd BMW and beat the depreciation? ..... ooops wrong thread :o:rofl:

Chris

The smart money's on keeping the Sport - it's going to lose nothing really from this point on. TBH unless the dings bother you I wouldn't bother spending money on fixing them (though I couldn't live without A\C) - you certainly wouldn't get it back on trade-in\resale.

That said, new cars you fancy have a way of burrowing into your consciousness and driving you mad until you buy them - there'll be a million & one sensible reasons to change if you really want to :D

Waiting to hear back from the dealer regarding the aircon.

I suppose the question is if the car is gonna last. I suppose though the most it can possibly devalue is what it's worth now which is alot less than the PD160 will lose in 3-5yrs.

My wife is happy with the car we just keep thinking maybe it's time to get rid of it. It was bought 2yrs ago for her to learn to drive in and as a cheap to run alternative to my Octy for longer journeys and general errands. We said she could get something better when she was more confident, hence why were weren't bothered about the dings and kerbed wheels before.

We're just trying to decide if to spend a bit of money sorting the current Ibiza or go for a new one. We can afford a new one but obviously

But would she like a Ibiza cupra? they are very different beasts to drive.. the suspension is rock hard..

Im up to 90.5k on my 53reg vRS now and am trying to make the decision about the longterm... i have a sachs clutch that im not sure if i should put it in or not and i could spend about 1k getting bits of suspension changed to make it drive like new again.. not much point if ill be getting shut of it soon.. but like you say, the money could be spent on something else... im sure i should be thinking about buying a house at this age rather than throwing money away on a exceedingly fast new car ;)

I don't think the ride in the cupra would be a problem for her but if was then we'd look at the FR.

Clutch is probably the next thing the Sport will need as there's the odd sign of slip occasionally. Suspension is fine as far as I'm concerned, handling and ride is very good IMHO, the wish bone bushes and front ARB bushes have been replaced but otherwise it's still original in that respect as far as I know.

Ah, Mr Welshy... We've been expecting you. :D :D :D

Well - until Feb06 I wasnt aware that the Ibiza came with the 130TDI PD engine but a friend of mine sourced one as I was encouraging him to buy a leggy 330d(!!!!) or a VAG 150PD but he was able to buy a fairly new one for just under

If all that is wrong with it is the air cn needs re gasing (
Air-con has been regassed and that didn't sort it, it's a dealer job by the looks of it. Cambelt was done at 80k so doesn't need doing until 140k.

Ibizas have Climatronic, don't they (with a screen)? Only reason I mention this is that I wonder if it's the evap temp sensor, and if so whether it's in the same place as on a Fabia. If it's in the same place as on the Fabia, then getting the dealer to fix it will relieve you of a considerable sum of cash (it's a dash-out job), but it can be replaced pretty easily DIY, if you know how. Wish I knew for certain 'cos it'd make a big difference cost-wise if you could just use the guide on here...

I say get your current sport up to a great standard, and let it serve you well for n more years. Its what I'm doing with the Passat.

Keeping on top of the little things keeps the car tip-top, and its not that expensive as long as you do repair things as/when they go wrong, and don't let niggles build up into bigger issues.

Financially, its a no-brainer. The PD130 is a tough cookie, and the Ibiza as a whole is fairly reliable...

Yes the Ibiza has pukka climate control. There's no fault codes relating to the evap temp sensor so don't think it's that. It's in the same place as on the furby AFAIK.

If we keep it the dents and wheels will be getting sorted, why should I drive a nice looking car and expect my wife to drive a shed? The dents are only minor though so we would be looking to get it done by means of a paintless repair. Wheels would be refurbed or replaced with 2nd hand OEM ones. Putting the

We are currently leaning towards keeping it, hence me fitting the new seat covers to give the interior a new lease of life. These are the covers we've gone for but with yellow stitching instead of red:

I just started this thread for a bit of reassurance that we were doing the right thing. :)

Ok so you have 20k before the cambelt needs changing & I guess you could make the clutch last another 20k.

Is that 2 years worth of use for your car?

If so maybe in 2 years time you may want to think about letting someone else change the belts & clutch.

Or if you do replace them then make sure you keep it - I mean why let the new owner have the benefit of those parts which you have bought??

Probably 1yr rather than 2 but I agree with the sentiment. I'd always get rid of a car just before servicing, new tyres etc.. rather than just after!

How much was the seat covers & did you fit them yourself?

Are these replacement oem covers, or over covers?

Yes Eddy, you ARE doing the right thing.

Get the car on the high mileage register too! :)

They're official Seat sport accessorie replacement covers. They're a bit fiddly to fit as there are small metal bars with hooks on sewn into the covers which then hook onto the seat foam in key places to keep them held in the right place and the material taught. Fitting takes a few hours but well worth the effort for the transformation.

I'll add the car to the register when I've checked what the mileage is.
