If I was going to buy a Skoda...

Featured Replies

it would have to be a vRS.

Now, the question is....Fabia or Octavia? I like the idea of 6 speed and diesel but is the Fabia big enough for me @ 6' 2" tall and would it be good at sitting on the motorway for up to 5 hours at a time?

Thanks, Jon

Ps. Hello to Ian C and some other ex-Impreza owners I know on here :)

Well, i had a Fabia (not a vRS) as a loan car while my Octy RS was in for a service the other week and there's no way i could live with one on a day to day basis. Its just too small.

I'm 6'3" by the way :)

Well I,m 6ft 1, and I found our previous Octy ok for long trips. The Fabia I tested was ok size wise for me, but if you regularly do that sort of motorway journeys/times how about the Superb?

Acres of room front and back...and very nice cruiser as well.

6'3" here and I find the Fabia plenty big enough. The choice between the Fabia vRS and Octavia vRS should be pretty easy, they are quite different. Anyone who's in the market for a petrol turbo prob isn't also in the market for a diesel.

Suely not another Cumbrian Scoob on here?

Ture ;)

I think dropping 100bhp might be a bit of a culture shock but I need to seriously consider fuel consumption if I'm going to be driving 600 miles every weekend....adding in my weekday milage I'd be spending circa

Areet marra ;)

Tia has moved to Oxford and I've moved from North Lancs to West CUmbria so one hell of a weekend commute on the cards :D

Why does the Octavia vRS not have a 6 speed box?

To be honest, I dont think it needs 6 gears. With 5 the performance if excellent, and I just couldnt be bothered with all those constant gear changes. The octy gearing is such that to reach 70mph only needs 1st and 2nd, 3rd is good for 100+ then 4th is 120ish and 5th = silly speeds.

Welcome Rusty !

Being 6'5" myself and having had a loan Furby for a day I can honestly admit that I would rather offer my kidney to science than buy one if you'd spend that long on the motorway. Go for an octy... much more comfortable.

If you are going to do such a large milage I think you have to go wiht the diesel option. The Octy vRS will not do much more than 35mpg on the motorway and the Fabia can get 55mpg easily. Try both see what you fit inside and the decide. If you fitthe Octy better then why not go for the 130PD lump in it?

:hilarius:

Having done almost 500 miles on saturday, i can honestry say that the Octy is a great motorway car ;)

But if you need diesel economy, and lots of room, go for a diesel Octy :)

Morning Jon...

Would expect you to struggle in a fabia, best try one and see, then do the obvious thing and drive rs, 4x4, pd130 octavia's and see what grabs you. Suspect a remapped pd130 may be the best option.

(impreza owners, we get em in the end :D)

Mornin' Jon :D

For once I agree with Ian  although I'd probably give the 4x4 a miss. Not because it is a bad car, it's just that it will be less economical that the others and harder to get hold of.

Only Fabia I've driven for any distance is a 1.4 MPI. I did 790 miles in 2.5 days. Had no problems with it other than it felt cramped compared to the Octavia and I'm a dwarf like 6'3"ish.

New Octys seem to have a higher seating position than the 00-01 models. I've ditched my RS and bought a diesel due to 60k miles per year. Do I miss my RS? YES! but only some of the time. I miss the punch and am having to get used to the torque rather than bhp. Can't complain at the 50+ MPG though :D

Why not come down to our meet on the 24th, see what you think of the various options available (although 4x4s may be a bit thin on the ground).

Jon

Jon

For gawd's sake, Jon, your namesake only needs to have a go in one 4X4 to get a feel for the difference between that and other lesser variants...

Lesser variants?

I was implying that they are more exclusive. :D

Either that or there aren't as many stupid people around as I had been led to believe ;)

Jon, wait 'till you ask what colour to get :D

That'll be the National day @ Bruntingthorpe then? Will have a look at the meets section and check my diary

I think it would be best to let Impreza owners get 4x4's it will be less of a culture shock... having said that maybe a pd130 chipped up would not be as daft as it sounds.. would think a Furby would be a little too slow/small if your used to the 200+ bhp of a petrol turbo.

Spectators are free and I'm sure you could probably get some passenger laps in the various cars. Think Steve is coming down from your way for it, or there are the North West (Midlands) members coming down from Manchester area. Get a ride down in an Octy, travel back in a rollerskate (sorry Fabia ;) ), see which is better for long trips?

Hi and Welcome!

For the mileage you do it's got to be a diesel and an Octy one at that for comfort.

PD130 and get it remapped. Jabba's PD130 Golf puts out 200bhp...not sure of the torque figure but I reckon it's enough. ;)

p.s I don't think Steve can make the meet now. :(

Having both an Octy and a Furby (both vRS) I'd say go for the Octy for size and if you are worried about fuel costs get a chipped deisel.

Both have there pros and cons and if we didn't have the Octy I wouldn't have a got a Furby as my guitars don't fit in it!!!!
