Are all VRS's really smokey????

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a 53 plate VRS with 15000 miles. I have had it a couple of months and I'm shocked by the amount of smoke it can chuck out when accelerating and when accelerating when you are in a high gear at low revs.

I have driven many diesels and never seen anything like with the VRS's. Is this a common thing and why does it do it on this car?

My car is going into the dealer for some work on tuesday and I'm wondering whether to ask them about it?

Thanks

Had 04 vRS 7 months now - 1st thing I did was replace air filter (16k), was 'grey going to black'. 40k change is way too late.

Also, get some Millers Diesel Sport 4 additive - tons of posts about this - cleans injectors, gives better performance / economy (you tend to use the performance), cuts down smoke, smoother quieter running.

500ml costs around

I have a new PiperX filter and the car has only done 15k.

I was following a mate in his Mondeo TDCI Ghia whatsit last week and that was chucking out plenty of black smoke when accelerating, I don't think mine is anything like as bad as that.

Any chance the previous owner has had a resistor mod/tuning box/cheap remap done?

I doubt it, it was an elderly 72 year old who lost confidence in driving so sold car back to dealer. Did 14.5k between sep 03 and apr 07

Easy answer is to not accelerate in high gears from low revs ;) Will also make you DMF last longer too!!

You might find if it wasn't driven enthusiastically, it could do with a bit of a blast to clear it out...............

Chris

Maybe needs an Italian tune up if thats the case, probably never been driven hard before ;)

I'll second the Mondy TDCI, I was behind 1 the other day and that thing did spew out some black smoke. Mine normally does it if I havent given it a blast for a bit.

Shot my 1st part down then :( - unless you've overoiled it or something

Nonetheless - whatever else is done, bang some Millers in, brill stuff.

BTW mine only smokes on booting it if I've only done a mile or so (can't resist :D on this particular patch of road I constantly use).

Maybe - as the other gents are saying - it needs a really good clear out (and the Millers will help do that - BTW, if you like it fasteronline.uk do a 5 litre pack for

I'd go with the 'hasn't been used properly' option too! I'd expect the smoke to reduce in time - go for a good blast every once in a while, clean everything out

I'd also fit a PD160 intake (loads of info about that on here and a very popular mod) - that tends to cut down on the smoke.

I'd go with the Millers additive suggestion too, this does help, in addition to decent fuel. What do you tend to fill up with?

Steve

EDIT: Just looked at your post again, and the mileage it's done  - definitely a good blast required I would say. The mileage, plus age of driver - I'm presuming here, but it's perhaps all be town and lower speed stuff?? It's probably never been past 3k with the first owner driving it!!

Steve is an authority on this :P

Sorry, couldn't resist :o

What, driving at below 3k all the time? :P

Or knowing about smoke and PD130s, seeing as this is my third? :D

Steve

I'd agree with the above - give the car a good thrash to clear out all the soot. Should help performance too!

Clearly a lot of lame people driving Mondeo TDCI's. Mine has never smoked, even with the tuning box on ;)

Chris

I've always found the TDCi units I've driven to be a lot quieter and less smokey than a comparable VAG TDi.

Steve

Hmmm strange, my old X-Type Jag which had the same 130 bhp TDCI unit used to enjoy putting out a bit of the black stuff......... and yes it was 'driven' with performance in mind on a few occasions.

Then again, a few reviews I read said it was mapped a bit differently to the unit found in the Mondy? Wasn't too convinced about that myself as it still put out the same 130bhp, all be it with some 'over boost' facility that gave it a bit more for a split second when it was bang on in the power band

The Mondy TDCi 130 has overboost as well, doesn't it?

Steve

Certainly does  I've noticed the Jag's are quite smokey too. They don' t handle as well ;)

Chris

Thought it did, like I said I was always a bit sceptical about it.... the only thing was Jag made a bit of a deal about how they'd tweeked the standard Ford unit (even though it still had the same output figures).. and I knew bugger all about Fords at the time so who was I to argue

Anyway, twas a cracking derv engine :D that, from my experience, put out soot just like the PD 130 does and every other derv engine appears too (just to get things back on topic :) )

Following Skudmissile the other day back to his house, I noticed a bit of smoke as e chaanged gear and was off boost. Standard map and a green panel filter.

I've also been behind a few other VAG PD's and they all give out the odd puff of soot. Thing is, the vRS tailpipe is straight out rather than pointing at the floor like on most other diesels these days. This is a reason why, I believe, the vRS 'looks' like it's smoking more than the equivalent Golf MkIV or Passat.

Also, on many occasions, I've booted it, mainly at night, and seen a huge cloud be left behind in the other guys headlights. The PD does overfuel to a degree, it must do. My missus HDi is FAR better on smoking. It produces hardly any and that's got 103k on the clock and she thrashes it all the time.

try following me when mine has the map on  makes an arriva bus look enviromentally freindley! i can see it puffing out of the exhaust in the day time never mind at night :D

my cousin has just aquired a 4.2 twin turbo weisel audi Q7 and thats got two exhausts and smokes its head off. 0-60 in 6.4 seconds tho for a car that weighs over 2 tonne isnt that bad tho

I think its just a "Characteristic" (apologise to SUK for using their word ;)) of the pd engine. i am yet to see a 1.9 pd that doesnt smoke.

Mine does not smoke much unless the aircon is on. This causes it to smoke a lot at high revs. PD160 intake makes a big difference to how sooty the back of the car gets.

Chris

I have just hit 90k on my vrs 04 plate and it always from new smoked alot when putting your foot down to get away from that mini cooper s. nothing to worry about the car uses about 750ml of oil between 10k serv. it just seem to be the way, passed mot with flying colour of exhuast emiss. so i hope that helps.
