Are all VRS's really smokey????

Featured Replies

If you have smoke then your injectors are blocked;-

They should emmit a fine spray of Diesel but can get clogged (could only be 1 or more injectors) so rather than a fine spray it is a drip. Simple cure is to take out the injector and clean it &/or replace the injector.

Would blocked injectors cause smoke?! Surely the car would smoke more if there wasn't enough air for the amount of fuel going in?

Kind of depends how bad - the impression Im getting here is its like a White Ford transit blowing out black smoke.

Its been into the dealer for other reasons and they checked the smoke at the same time, they have said the smoke it has is normal for the4 PD engine.

Blocked or worn nozzles on the old low pressure diesels resulted in fuel dribbling into the swirl chambers or cylinders and a poor burn which meant smoke. This only happens though on cars that have been driven gently for a long time or have mega mileage.

On a car that is regularly red lined (Italian tune-up) then it's not normally an issue.

Instead it's normally a lack of air to burn up the excess fuel in the cylinders.

On turbocharged cars it tends to happen just before the turbo comes on boost. Fuel is injected into the cylinders in a slightly larger quantity that what air is available as the turbo is not in full swing yet, and smoke is the result. Older TD's were worse as the fuel injection was not computer controlled and they relied on vacuum to tell the injector pump when to start banging more fuel in.

I get the feeling the PD has been designed to overfuel slightly at lower rpm as most PD's I've seen smoke when pootling about. I think a good custom map should sort this right out if the mapper know's what he's doing. Making the fuelling curve a bit more gradual and leaning it out at the bottom, to richen it up at the top when on full boost would be the wisest bet.

EGR valves are also known to increase soot emissions as they reduce the cylinder temperatures because the exhaust gas being put back in has a lower specific heat ratio.

As a result, the temps are lower meaning less fuel is successfully burnt and more goes out the tailpipe. It probably means lower mpg and less power as a result due to you getting less bang per stroke.

Later PD's will be worse on soot as the EGR valve recirculates much more exhaust gas in an attempt to reduce CO2 and NOX, such as on the BLT engine.

Yeah they can. The pattern of the spray can effect the efficiency of the burn.

Mine is a bit smokey but the turbo blew up and it spat oil into the intercooler.

In a (possibly weak) attempt to clean it up I have got some Ecotek foam to put through the system. Has anybody esle used this on a Fabia VRS? I used it on an Octavia VR with great results.

Ive also added some Mega Super Diesal Addative 903 (from ebay) to the diesal and thats seems to have quite an effect on the engine in a positive way. Bit less smoke, a bit smoother, a bit better economy.

I was sat in very very slow traffic yesterday for around 1.5 hours, since I managed to get up to normal speeds the car seems to be even more smokey, is it just clearing something out due to being in the traffic?

Nope.

YTou could put in some Millers cleaner - it cleanes the carbon off the valve seats and cleans up the combustion chamber which will lead to a more efficient burn.

Then again maybe your flooring it rather than driving up the revs i.e. 4th at 40mph foot to the carpet rather than feed in the power - the 1st will in any car give a lot more smoke as your pouring in the fuel.

Just watch the V8 series (channel 5 early hrs every week) you see them with so much black smoke as they run full throttle most of the time.

Hi,

I have a 53 plate VRS with 15000 miles. I have had it a couple of months and I'm shocked by the amount of smoke it can chuck out when accelerating and when accelerating when you are in a high gear at low revs.

I have driven many diesels and never seen anything like with the VRS's. Is this a common thing and why does it do it on this car?

My car is going into the dealer for some work on tuesday and I'm wondering whether to ask them about it?

Thanks

Hey, you need to clean your exhaust pipe, that's all mate. Think of it like this, a chimney. Doesn't matter how well maintained or clean your fireplace is - your chimney will still be full of soot.

Put a hosepipe inside your exchaust pipe and blast that dust, dirt and soot out.

No more smoke!

 Is that how you get 873bhp/gl??

Also if you do only get 873bhp/gl how come you only achieve 185mph - pretty lame. Can you afford some more cash and a better more skilled engineer to get you some more power?

Is this water injection and you get steam instead of smoke:P

My jc tuner retired from F1, and is now enjoying the lack of pressure in tuning covers with over 5,000 hp, support by c-ave.

Also, why would I need more than 185? It's not like you'll realistically need more than that, is it? Unless you're one of those charvers who think speeding and killing people is fun. Grow up, Welshy!

Secondly, don't bring your trolling into other people's threads, please. You're off-topic. This is about Rik's mucky exhaust pipe, that needs hosing out with a little fairy liquid and hot water from a hosepipe!

Ever heard of Gearing? Your becomming silly now.

ME - dont you think Im deliberatly playing devils advocate with this idiot?

Don't put water up your exhaust pipe!!

None of these cars smoke in the slightest compared to the older IDI engines so relax.

IMHO a couple of tanks of good fuel, with a double dose of millers, a clean air filter and a good warm it up and then give it some beans session will have it clean as anything again.

IMHO a couple of tanks of good fuel

Don't start that debate again! ;)

Chris

if you dont like smoke buy an environmental sound petrol turbo.

Has anyone got a link to this millers cleaner so I know what I'm looking for? Also can I get it at Halfords?

There are two on this site:

Speeding.co.uk Car Accessories Millers MotorSport

Which do I need and how much is it normally in shops?

Don't put water up your exhaust pipe!!.

Why not? I do it all the time, and my car never smokes.

  • 3 weeks later...

Im not sur ethis os gona be any help to you but if it makes you feel better the other week at gti fest a fabia vrs was doing the round up the strip and he he you wouldnt beleve what it was leaving behind it :) it went well tho so theres the swings n roundabouts :) but least it was prob gettin 30 to the gallon up it

cool

Because it'll rot the exhaust from the inside out and won't stop it smoking.
