Engine noise and vibration after pulling away

Featured Replies

Help.

Just got a 2nd hand Fabia 1.2 Petrol (2004). 30k on the clock.

It is making a strange noise that our 2006 Fabia 1.2 Petrol does not make.

1) Start the car

2) Pull away

3) About 3 seconds after pulling away there is a "burrr" noise from the front. It lasts 1 second and a vibration is felt back through the accelerator pedal. Passenger can hear it if the radio is off.

It never does it again unless you stop and turn off the engine and then restart it and pull away.

I found a way to clearly hear the noise after I stalled at a junction and coasted forwards while restarting. The noise occurs as the electrics come on before the engine is fired up.

1) drive forwards. hold down the clutch and coast along

2) turn off the engine and electrics

3) continue coasting (the noise only happens when moving)

4) turn the key so the electrics are back on but don't start the engine

5) you hear the noise as soon as the electrics come on.

6) A burrrr noise. Lasts 1 second.

You don't hear it if you turn the electrics on and off when stationary.

(you hear the fuel pump as usual so it is not that)

It feels and sounds like something mechanical moving making the burr noise.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Roger

I've noticed a noise exactly the same as described here whenever I start my 1.4 16V Fabia in the morning. I figured it was the power steering kicking in.

Can anybody confirm this?

i too notice this in my instuctors car sometimes. it just seems normal to me really. its if it vibrates and stops in a cloud of smoke your in trouble lol. it seems to be just one of them things.

I also have what seems to be the same sound. At first it was quite worrying because, to me, it sounded like something on the bottom of the car was very briefly scraping the asphalt and you could feel it though the pedal, as you said. We mentioned it to the Skoda dealer and they suggested it was just rust on the brakes, but if that was it, it would only happen when you start the car after leaving it at least overnight. Although it lasts only a second, it's a loud sound, accompanied by vibration you can feel in the pedals, and only when you are pulling away and (as far as I can remember) only once, after you start the engine. Will try RogerH's method to see if I can reproduce it. 1.4 16V combi.

I've also heard since that it might be an ABS self-diagnostic test. It certainly feels like this.

ABS system cycling self test.
